The Canopy Jersey City Arts District is seeking a temporary server for STUDIO, the hotel''s restaurant & bar.
Job Title: Temporary Server
Position Summary:
Ensure that all guests are served to the hotel’s standard in STUDIO, displaying the highest standards of hospitality and welcome at all times within all food and beverage areas. Take orders for and serve food and beverages to guests in a friendly, timely, and efficient manner. Must have opened availability.
Responsibilities
- Greet guests and present them with the menu
- Inform guests about daily specials and menu changes
- Suggest food and beverages and offer upsell options
- Take orders from guests on order pads or the handheld POS system
- Handle revenue processing: issue receipts, accept payments, and return change
- Perform basic cleaning tasks as directed by supervisor
- Fill in for absent staff as needed
- Record special guest requirements (e.g., allergies, dietary restrictions) on orders
- Communicate with guests and assist with queries
- Coordinate with kitchen and bar staff to ensure smooth operation and guest satisfaction
- Serve food and beverages according to guest orders
- Monitor guest satisfaction and address needs promptly
- Maintain dining area cleanliness and replenish utensils and beverages
- Prepare beverages for service as needed and pour wine at tableside
- Adhere to grooming and appearance standards
- Understand and communicate hotel products and services
- Maintain familiarity with basic cooking skills
- Assist with stocking and maintaining restaurant par stock and side stations
- Assist other areas of the restaurant (e.g., answering phones, processing transactions)
- Print closing reports and perform cash drops; tally credit card settlements
- Close the shift on the POS terminal
- Interact with guests, take drink and snack orders, and present bar menu
- Check guest IDs to verify age for alcohol service
- Mix and serve cocktails and other drinks per hotel standards
- Arrange bottles and glassware attractively
- Assess guest needs and make recommendations; upsell where appropriate
- Keep bar counter and work area neat and clean
- Provide guidance on local activities and hotel information
- Identify when a guest has had too much to drink and politely refuse further service if required
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of food and beverage products, menus, and promotions
- Handle and move glassware and bottles safely
- Clean up after guests and maintain clean work areas; wash glassware and utensils
- Maintain a clean working area, including cleaning of glass doors/windows as needed
- Perform physical activities as required (lifting, stooping)
- Maintain liquor inventory and track usage
- Collect payments and balance receipts; manage assigned house bank per hotel procedures
- Prepare inventory or requisitions to replenish supplies
- Ensure the bar area is equipped with tools and products needed for mixing beverages
- Stay guest-focused and nurture an excellent guest experience
- Comply with all food and beverage regulations
- Perform other duties as assigned by hotel management
Prerequisites
Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience: Previous serving/bartending experience required. Positive interpersonal skills required.
