Position Summary:

The Children’s Services Librarian provides programs, resources, and services for children ages 0-11 and their families, caregivers, and educators. Performs professional and technical library work in one or more specific areas such as Adult, Teen, Children's, Technical Services, Materials Management or regional history/genealogy.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides developmentally appropriate programs for children ages birth to 11 years on a weekly basis
  • Works cooperatively with the Children’s Services division on system-wide projects and initiatives
  • Assists with planning, scheduling, and implementing branch programs and community outreach
  • Assists with training library service associates and volunteers
  • Monitors library collection and resources

Essential Functions:

  • Meets customers' informational, research and pleasure reading needs by matching requests to appropriate resources
  • Determines the timeliest, authoritative and appropriate information source for each customer
  • Trains customers in the use of electronic reference resources, internet searches, e-books and digital downloads

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of public library experience
  • Master’s degree in Library science from an ALA-accredited institution
  • NC Public Library certification required or must be obtained within 12 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children 11 years and younger
  • Experience providing strategic leadership in outreach and engagement, particularly with vulnerable and underserved communities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of library science, reference interview process, and library classification system
  • Skills in readers' advisory, reference resources, and customer service
  • Abilities in decision-making, collaboration, technical/professional knowledge, planning, and customer focus
