Parish Liturgy and Music Director
Saint Catharine of Alexandria in Blauvelt, NY is seeking a full-time Music Director. It is a dynamic, multi-generational parish of 2,400 registered families, located 20 miles north of NYC in Rockland County.
Objective: To help all members of Saint Catharine’s Parish grow in grace through Jesus Christ by supporting their singing of God’s praises as they meditate upon the text of the scriptures, hymns, psalms, acclamations, and choral compositions during all Masses and services for which music is an integral part. The music must be of the highest quality so as to be spiritually inspirational.
Basic Qualifications:
- Active Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Catholic Church
- Choir Conducting Skills
- Ability to play the organ
- Deep knowledge and familiarity with the Rites of the Catholic Liturgy and Tradition
- Ability to coordinate the music and liturgy for Sundays, Holy Days, Celebrations in collaboration with the Pastor, other clergy, staff, lay ministers, and volunteers
Specific Responsibilities:
- Directing the parish choir
- Growing and developing the parish choir
- Growing and developing the Parish Children’s Choir and Music Program
- Working closely with the Clergy, Director of Religious Education, and School of Early Childhood Development for all special liturgies, events, or masses
- Planning music for other liturgies such as Confirmation, First Communion/Reconciliation, Christmas Pageant, etc.
- Encouraging, offering, and/or facilitating liturgical and musical formation to choir members and cantors
- Providing music for Sunday Masses and creating music ministry schedules
- Scheduling cantors
- Providing and/or organizing the music for funerals and weddings
- Meeting regularly with Clergy
- Providing any musical information needed for worship aids
- Working collaboratively and appropriately with other staff members
- Facilitating the preparation of any binders necessary for various liturgies
- Overseeing the musical equipment of the parish
Additional Expectations:
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a volunteer choir
- Strong computer and organizational skills
- Celebration of certain solemnities of the Church which are not obligatory
- Love for the Church’s musical Tradition
- Appreciation and basic proficiency in chant
- Appreciation of contemporary music that is in harmony with Tradition
Salary will range between $40,000 - $50,000. Additional compensation – funerals (60-80 per year) and weddings (3-7 per year)
