Position Overview Under the direction of the Mechanical Engineer and Project Manager, the Mechanical Designer will: Apply mechanical and thermodynamic principles to design and specify HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems
Perform load estimation and energy usage calculations (heating, cooling, ventilation)
Complete energy code compliance, modeling, and documentation
Participate actively in coordination meetings with architects, structural, electrical, and client teams
Interface with vendors and contractors for equipment procurement, submittals, and clarifications
Conduct site surveys, observe construction progress, and document as-built conditions
Review and comment on submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings
As you grow in level, you’ll assume more independence, lead coordination, mentor junior designers, and take on larger scopes. Key Duties & Responsibilities Become knowledgeable in (or be developing expertise with) HVAC system types (e.g. VAV, DOAS, VRF, geothermal) and integrate them with

Coordinate system clearances, space constraints, and interactions for all MEPT (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Thermal) elements
Calculate HVAC load estimates (sensible, latent, system diversity) for spaces, buildings, and industrial / process areas
Perform field site surveys, capturing existing conditions, measurements, and constraints
Prepare conceptual and construction cost estimates (material, labor, installation)
Under supervision (or independently, at higher levels), design: Ductwork: layout, sizing, routing
Air distribution: grille/register/diffuser selection
Central and terminal HVAC units selection (AHUs, FCUs, VAV boxes, etc.)
Hydronic piping: sizing, routing, pump selection
Central plant equipment: boilers, chillers, pumps, heat exchangers
Control and automation systems: sequence of operations, control strategies, integration
Produce and maintain Revit (or equivalent BIM) models, detail views, annotations, and schedules
Collaborate with multi-discipline team to coordinate clashes, resolve interferences, and ensure integrative design
Review vendor submittals and shop drawings for compliance, respond to RFI’s, and track changes
Visit construction sites to observe installation progress, flag deviations, and support commissioning and as-built documentation
Mentor junior designers or interns (for higher levels) and review their work
Contribute ideas toward improving internal standards, templates, and processes
Qualifications & Experience Mechanical Designer Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Engineering, or related field
plus ~2 years
of relevant experience or
Associate degree or technical diploma plus
Strong fundamental understanding of thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer
Familiarity with HVAC systems, load calculations, and mechanical equipment
Strong Proficiency in Revit
Good communication skills, ability to collaborate, solid attention to detail
