Overview
Library Technician role at Lucia Mar Unified School District.
Site: Shell Beach Elementary School.
Responsibilities
- Assist and instruct students and staff in learning to be effective users of the library and information, including guidance in selecting reading materials and locating information using electronic sources.
- Work with staff to plan programs that encourage student reading and library use.
- Gather materials for teachers or classes in various curricular areas.
- Read aloud to or tell stories to classes daily.
- Facilitate development of the collection by compiling orders for new materials and withdrawing outdated items.
- Maintain an attractive, cheerful learning environment with book displays and bulletin boards.
- Promote library use through public relations, including posters, flyers, school newsletters, and assisting with book fairs and fundraisers.
- Maintain a system for circulating and retrieving materials and assist with processing and distribution of books, student devices, and other media.
- Notify students of overdue materials, collect fines and payments for lost or damaged items, and maintain related records.
- Prepare annual inventory and monthly circulation reports.
- Direct and coordinate student assistants and volunteers.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school graduation or its equivalent.
- Some office or library clerical experience.
- Ability to speak and write effectively; research and retrieve information using computer technology; work independently; work calmly and accurately under pressure and with frequent interruptions; establish and maintain cooperative relationships.
Desirable:
- Certificate of Proficiency in Library Technology or related library technology courses from a community college.
- Experience working with groups of children/young people.
- Knowledge of library media systems and practices, operating instructional media and equipment; knowledge of children/young people literature and basic curriculum; ability to search and use information using technology; basic computer hardware/software and related applications.
- Keyboarding ability.
- Ability to communicate verbally in Spanish.
Physical, Mental, and Social Requirements
Physical: Stand, sit for extended periods; ascend/descend stairs; see and read printed matter; hear and understand speech; speak clearly; lift up to 50 pounds occasionally; operate computer keyboards and equipment; move throughout the building and grounds.
Mental: Concentrate on tasks, learn quickly, meet deadlines, and communicate clearly in writing and speaking.
Social: Interact daily with staff, maintain consistent attendance, communicate with students, parents and community, and maintain confidentiality of information.
Work Details
- Work days: 196 days (Student days + 5) on a 196 Day Work Year Calendar
- Schedule: Monday – Friday, 6 hours/day, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- Salary: Range 16–19; salary placement from $18.71–$25.76 hourly
- Salary prorated based on start date and prior experience
