Partnering with the NYC Innovation Team in the Mayor’s Office, a cross-disciplinary group working to improve access to services for New Yorkers, and the Mayor’s Office of Child Care and Early Childhood Education, the Office of Technology and Innovation is requesting a UX Design Lead to support the NYC Child Care Digital Hub project. The goal of this project is to create a single digital hub for families to learn about their child care options and find child care for children aged 5 and below. The hub will also support child care providers with information on how to begin and continue providing child care services to New Yorkers, including content and features such as a screening process for parents, referrals, information about available childcare services, and/or a unified map/provider services locator.
The UX Design Lead will work with internal and external stakeholders to lead the UX strategy and interaction design, and contribute to front-end development for the child care hub website.
Scope of Services
The UX Design Lead is a strategic leader who advocates for user-driven and data-based digital experiences for New Yorkers. This position reports to OTI Digital Service and works closely with the Innovation Team in the Mayor’s Office to improve the digital experience of child care access. The Lead will leverage interaction design and front-end development skills to create prototypes for user testing and implement design solutions that meet the needs of parents and childcare providers, ensuring the hub serves as a comprehensive resource for information, referrals, and services related to childcare in New York. The Hub is nearing launch, so the role includes final design adjustments leading up to launch, and beginning to develop and test new feature prototypes for version 2.0. After launch, responsibilities include tracking and analyzing performance metrics, refining the design, and building out and integrating new features for version 2.0.
Responsibilities
- Create design artifacts to advance project goals, including visual designs, images, illustrations, responsive web layouts, prototypes, icons, reports, synthesis documents, user journey maps, user interface flows, wireframes, and comprehensive style guides.
- Collaborate with other UX designers to build and improve a common design system where appropriate.
- Lead design activities and participate in user research and service design; support a large-scale, high-profile project.
- Work with developers to understand micro-interactions, behaviors, and implementation of designs in code.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product managers, UX researchers, content strategists, developers) to translate user needs into design solutions.
- Develop prototypes and high-fidelity designs for the childcare hub website.
- Conduct prototype testing for new features, analyze findings, and develop design recommendations.
- Collaborate with a content strategist to develop the overall content design strategy and enhance user experience.
Mandatory Skills/Experience
Note: Candidates who do not have the mandatory skills will not be considered.
- At least 8 years of proven experience in user experience design, with a strong portfolio of successful user-friendly consumer-facing solutions.
- Strong visual design sensibility including typography, spacing, and layout.
- Proficiency in Figma with demonstrated experience in independently creating end-to-end design solutions.
- Strong understanding of user-centered design processes, including mapping digital journeys, creating low-to-high fidelity mockups, and building testable prototypes that enhance usability and accessibility.
- Ability to synthesize user research and data insights into design hypotheses and solutions.
- Ability to incorporate feedback from teammates to improve designs.
- Experience collaborating with product and content strategists to translate outlines and requirements into design solutions.
- Experience working with developers to test prototypes and conduct visual QA to ensure products are built as intended.
- Strong communication skills; able to articulate design concepts and strategies to non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable Skills/Experience
The following are preferred but not required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Design, UX Design, HCI, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Experience in cross-disciplinary teams with product managers, engineers, and content strategists.
- Experience working in public sector or with government partners.

- Experience conducting usability testing and translating findings into actionable design recommendations.
- Familiarity with limited design systems and adapting components to meet user needs while considering technical feasibility.
- Understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in design practice and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
