Job Description

JSL is seeking a Senior Reporter / Writer responsible for producing high-quality, accurate, and engaging written content that communicates NSWC Corona’s mission, capabilities, and accomplishments to internal and external audiences. This role involves researching, writing, editing, and proofreading a variety of materials including articles, feature stories, scripts, presentations, and video subtitles. The Senior Reporter / Writer also assists with content strategy, guides junior writers, and ensures that all outputs align with Navy standards and public affairs policies.

Responsibilities

  • Produce compelling articles, news releases, feature stories, and other written content for internal and external publications, newsletters, websites, and social media channels.
  • Conduct interviews with Navy personnel, leadership, technical experts, and other stakeholders to gather accurate and relevant information.
  • Research and verify facts, statistics, and technical information to ensure accuracy and credibility of content.
  • Edit and proofread submissions for grammar, style, clarity, and adherence to Navy public affairs standards.
  • Collaborate with videographers, graphic designers, and other content creators to support video productions and multimedia storytelling.
  • Develop content for presentations, slides, and scripts for video or live events, including captions and subtitles.
  • Assist in planning and executing communications campaigns, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and audience engagement strategies.
  • Mentor and guide junior writers and interns in research, writing, and editing practices.
  • Maintain editorial calendars and track content development, deadlines, and approvals.
  • Ensure all content is consistent with Navy messaging, branding, and public affairs policies.
  • Stay current with emerging trends in journalism, digital media, and military communications to enhance storytelling and engagement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communications, English, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in journalism, writing, or public affairs, preferably within a government, military, or defense context.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce accurate, compelling, and audience-appropriate content under tight deadlines.
  • Strong interviewing, research, and investigative skills.
  • Expertise in AP style, technical writing, and Navy/public sector writing standards.
  • Experience collaborating with multimedia teams (video, graphic design, digital media).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, content management systems (CMS), and social media platforms.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance- Secret
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with government or DoD communications policies and protocols.
  • Knowledge of NSWC mission areas, technical systems, and Navy operations.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro) for multimedia content support.

Security Clearance

Applicants must have an active security clearance and/or the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance as specified in the minimum qualifications. Selected candidates will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements to obtain a DoD government-granted security clearance. Individuals will be subject to a background investigation including, but not limited to, criminal history, employment, and education verification, drug testing, and creditworthiness.
