Salary: This is an exempt (salaried) position. Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity. Internal equity considerations include an assessment of the applicant’s salary history and qualifications in comparison to the market rate and requirements for the job. Application deadline: 10/19/25. Salary Range: $60,612.00 - $75,765.00.

This library system serves a community of approximately one million citizens in Charlotte and the towns of Matthews, Pineville, Mint Hill, Davidson, Cornelius, and Huntersville in Mecklenburg County. The library is accessible and welcoming to all, with a mission to create a community of readers and empower individuals with free access to information and ideas through 20 locations, online services, and targeted outreach.

Location: Library Administration Center, 510 Stitt Road, Charlotte, NC 28213.

Position Summary

The Library Communications Specialist I focuses on internal and external communications for Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. This position is responsible for learning and understanding all aspects of the library, leading and executing internal communications strategies (including content for the intranet), handling public relations (writing press releases, building media relationships, monitoring media coverage), and writing, developing, and designing Library communications as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Establish/Distribute organizational messages about Library initiatives, projects, events, etc.
  • Develop/Refine internal/external communications strategy, then execute.
  • Oversee internal/external communications tools/channels including use/design standards, training, and content review.
  • Assist with internal educational/morale events.
  • Develop internal responses/communications surrounding crisis events.
  • Handle media inquiries and public records requests.
  • Develop media pitches and responses; give on-camera interviews when CMO, CEO, or subject matter expert not available or needed.
  • Develop, maintain, and update content on Forewordnet (Library’s intranet).
  • Work with team to provide PR components of marketing campaigns.
  • Attend events on some evenings and weekends.
  • Participate in local, state, and national professional organizations.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of related experience in marketing, communications, or related field.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, or related field.
  • Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted: Yes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three to five years of related experience in marketing, communications, or related field.
  • Highly organized, independent worker, yet also effective in a team setting.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with versatility in styles and tailoring to specific audiences or channels.
  • Experience writing content for both print and digital media.
  • Organizational and project management skills; attention to detail; ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities.
  • Google Analytics a plus.
  • Basic understanding of SharePoint and Drupal.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of: Marketing, Data analytics, Basic design principles to create flyers, images, web banners, Social media trends and best practices, General knowledge of library functions and activities, Basic web content management systems.
  • Skills: Excellent verbal, grammatical and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; excellent organizational and time management skills with attention to detail; media monitoring; social media publishing; showing initiative, creativity, and adaptability.
  • Abilities: Building partnerships; clear communication across media; decision making; information monitoring; technical/professional knowledge and skills; work standards.

Computer Skills

  • Excellent command of various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Basic skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat Professional, Adobe Cloud, Photoshop, etc.).

Work Environment

Works in an office setting with moderate noise.
