We deliver library services and programs from 20 locations, online, and through targeted outreach, to create a community of readers and empower individuals with access to information and ideas.

Position Summary

The Library Communications Specialist I focuses on internal and external communications for Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. This role is responsible for learning and understanding all aspects of the library and for leading and executing internal communications strategies, including content for the intranet; handling public relations (press releases, media relations, media monitoring); and writing, developing, and designing Library communications as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Establish and distribute organizational messages about Library initiatives, projects, events, and related activities.
  • Develop and refine internal and external communications strategy; execute the strategy.
  • Oversee internal/external communications tools and channels, including standards, training, and content review.
  • Assist with internal educational and morale events.
  • Develop internal responses and communications surrounding crisis events.
  • Handle media inquiries and public records requests.
  • Develop media pitches and responses; participate in on-camera interviews when appropriate.
  • Develop, maintain, and update content on Forewordnet (the Library’s intranet).
  • Collaborate with the team to provide PR components of marketing campaigns.
  • Attend events on some evenings and weekends.
  • Participate in local, state, and national professional organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of related experience in marketing, communications, or a related field.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field.
  • Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted: Yes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three to five years of related experience in marketing, communications, or a related field.
  • Highly organized, independent worker, yet effective in a team setting.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with versatility in styles for specific audiences or channels.
  • Experience writing content for print and digital media.
  • Organizational and project management skills; attention to detail; ability to juggle multiple projects.
  • Google Analytics is a plus; basic understanding of SharePoint and Drupal.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:
Marketing, data analytics, basic design principles for flyers and web banners, social media trends, general knowledge of library functions, basic web content management systems.

Skills:
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication; strong organizational and time management skills; media monitoring; social media publishing; initiative and adaptability.

Abilities:
Building partnerships; effective communication across media; decision making; information monitoring; technical/professional knowledge and skills; maintaining high work standards.

Computer Skills

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; basic skills in Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat Pro, Adobe Cloud, Photoshop).

Work Environment

Office setting with moderate noise.
