Overview

Publicist (Hybrid) — UC Press (UC Office of the President, Oakland, CA)

Join a mission-driven publisher elevating books that inform, inspire, and catalyze change. UC Press is seeking a collaborative, media-savvy Publicist to plan and run publicity campaigns that secure reviews, features, interviews, and events for our authors across news, culture, academic, and industry outlets.

Responsibilities

• Craft and pitch compelling media angles; write press releases, talking points, and op-eds.
• Coordinate author tours, conferences, and virtual events; secure and amplify coverage.
• Advise authors on platform development and media readiness.
• Partner closely with Editorial, Marketing, and Sales to maximize impact and revenue.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience).
• 2+ years in publicity/communications (book publicity a plus).
• Sharp writing, excellent organization, and confident relationship-building.
• Fluency with Word, Excel, Google Drive; comfort learning new tools.
• Calm under deadlines; able to juggle multiple titles and timelines.

Location & schedule

Oakland, CA (UCOP Broadway Building). California residency required.

Hybrid: on-site at least two days/week (currently Wed/Thu).

Occasional travel (~5%).

Compensation & benefits

Classification: Marketing Specialist 2 (Grade 19).

Hourly range: $36.87–$41.04 (pprox.. $77,000–$85,700 annually), commensurate with experience.
