Position Vacancy Announcement
Florida A&M University's Department of Campus Safety and Security is pleased to announce the acceptance of qualified applications for the Police Communications Operator vacancy.
Responsibilities
This is non-sworn law enforcement work that operates and monitors telephone, radio transmissions via a two-way police radio, and computer systems in a public safety communications center; Receives and evaluates calls from the public requesting police assistance of both emergency and non-emergency nature; Receives and transmits messages to and from FAMU law enforcement officers on complaints, crimes in progress and general police communications; Refers callers to appropriate agencies or extensions; and uses a computer terminal to update and monitor the unit status, as well as, transmit requests for emergency services.
Monitors surveillance cameras and building alarms regarding fires and illegal entry and dispatches the same to appropriate personnel; Monitors the police scanner for emergency situations occurring in and around the general campus area as well as the inner city; Relays messages regarding the safety and conditions of police officers performing hazardous duties; and makes written records of all radio and telephone transmissions, messages, and complaints to and from officers and the general public as required by the F.C.C. and the FAMU Police Department.
Operates the FCIC/NCIC criminal computer according to rules and regulations established by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and follows all rules and regulations as stated in the Communications standard operating pros (SOP) manual; Operates a personal computer system that provides information from criminal justice information system (CTIS) and the University, for student records and employee addresses, housing information and auto registration; Assists in the operation and transmission of the Everbridge Notification and the Federal Warning Systems. Operates the T.D.D. machine for the hearing impaired; Works special details as needed; and performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of work experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Successful completion of the State 911 Certification and NCIC/FCIC systems tests are required within six months of hire.
Recommended Competencies
Knowledge of all phases of police communications; Knowledge of computer terminal and FClC/NCIC rules and regulations; Knowledge of enhanced 911-system; Knowledge of the criminal justice information system; Ability to utilize conflict resolution skills; Ability to demonstrate critical thinking based upon in-depth data, substantiating information, considering, and respecting others input and personal values and ethics; Ability to respond to the public in a courteous, calm, and effective manner; Ability to communicate effectively in writing; Ability to differentiate emergency from non-emergency situations; Ability to function under stress and in emergency situations and make independent decisions; Ability to function and perform basic computer functions independently with minimal supervision; Advanced ability to gather, interpret, report, and/or edit information; Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations; Ability to utilize problem solving skills; and Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related University policies, procedures, principles, and practices.
Preferred Qualifications
Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Successful completion of the State 911 Certification and NCIC/FCIC systems tests are required within six months of hire.
Anticipated Salary Range
The starting salary is 42,000
Licenses and Certifications
This position requires a background check and/or fingerprinting. This position requires FCIC/NCIC certification and the State of Florida-Department of Health 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification.
Pay Plan
This is an USPS (University Support Personnel System) position.
Conditions of Employment
Successful candidate is subject to a pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks and verification of education. An official college transcript, a high school diploma, or other educational documents must be submitted, where applicable, at the time of employment.

FAMU Police Dispatch Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Employee must be able to work rotating shifts (ESSENTIAL), and work special events if needed.
