Nashville Public Radio is hiring: Editor, The Upshot in New York
Nashville Public Radio, New York, NY, United States
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
About The Role
The New York Times is looking for an editor to lead The Upshot, a desk that has produced some of our most innovative and creative explanatory journalism, making complex issues in politics, policy and everyday life accessible and engaging for Times readers.
The Upshot has a wide remit. It is the home of cutting-edge data visualization, detailed policy analysis, Nate Cohn's newsletter and standalone destinations like Wordle Bot and Spelling Bee Buddy. The desk is powered by a collaborative, multidisciplinary group of journalists, including reporters with decades of experience covering politics, government policy, gender, health care and cities, along with some of our best software developers and data visualizers.
Together, They Produce Work Like This
“An Extremely Detailed Map of New York City Neighborhoods”
“How One Polling Decision Is Leading to Two Distinct Stories of the Election”
“DOGE's Only Public Ledger Is Riddled With Mistakes”
The 10-Minute Challenge
Wordle Bot: Your Daily, Personalized Wordle Score
“A Huge Threat to the U.S. Budget Has Receded. And No One Is Sure Why.”
“Coastal Cities Priced Out Low-Wage Workers. Now College Graduates Are Leaving, Too.”
“When A.I.'s Output Is a Threat to A.I. Itself”
“A List of Nearly Everything in the G.O.P. Bill, and How Much It Would Cost or Save”
Flashback, a Weekly History Quiz
The Upshot also plays a strong role in The Times's coverage of Washington, with stories that have dissected government actions and complex legislation — such as the administration's efforts to reshape the federal government or the details and accounting methods of the new tax and domestic policy bill — and revealed their real-world consequences.
You are a forward-thinking leader who can build on the desk's momentum and chart its next course, both in its approach to news and enterprise journalism, as well as the storytelling forms, technologies and platforms it uses to communicate those ideas.
You are an experienced editor with a curiosity that runs across many subjects and a deep appreciation for visuals and technology — along with an idea of how they all fit together. You display a creative approach to covering the news along with an ability to help find stories that might otherwise be missed.
This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week.
