The Atlantic is seeking a Senior Visuals Editor to join our visuals team. This person will report to the Visuals Director overseeing our digital coverage, and will play a key role in helping manage the flow of short-term assignments and ensuring strong, timely visual execution across our daily journalism. They will also commission and art direct assignments as needed.
We’re looking for someone with excellent news judgment, strong organizational and communication skills, and a sharp visual eye. You might come from a background in photo editing, art direction, or editorial production. The ideal candidate should be able to work collaboratively, move quickly, and provide guidance when needed to a busy and ambitious team to ensure that all work meets The Atlantic’s design, production, and editorial standards. They should have familiarity working with sensitive and complex subject matter, and the ability to be both creative and nimble in responding to news. The role will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work.
Responsibilities Support the Visuals Director in coordinating the day-to-day visual needs of the newsroom, including tracking short-term assignments and helping ensure clarity around deadlines and expectations.
Act as a bridge between editors and visuals team members—keeping everyone aligned as publishing schedules shift.
Commission and curate visuals (photography and illustration) for daily stories, features, and special projects
Contribute to improving workflows and systems to help the team operate more efficiently as we grow
Collaborate with teams across the newsroom to maintain consistency and quality and to help innovate as we grow our visual operations
Qualifications 10+ years of experience in a newsroom or editorial environment, ideally in a visuals-related role
Strong editorial judgment, with a demonstrated ability to make thoughtful, timely visual decisions in a fast-paced setting
Experience commissioning photography or illustration and working with creatives
Comfortable tracking multiple assignments at once and communicating clearly across teams
Management experience preferred
A collaborative approach and a desire to support a team
Salary Salary Minimum: $105,000; Salary Maximum: $125,000
