Position Overview

The University Writing Center employs peer consultants to provide writing tutorial assistance to undergraduate and graduate students at ECU both in person and online. The Center is the primary student outreach component of the University Writing Program, linked administratively to the Department of English and reporting through the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences.

Job Duties

The Assistant Director primarily oversees tutor training and staff development, with occasional teaching of a special credit-bearing course. Key responsibilities include professional development sessions for faculty and students, support of day-to-day operations of the Writing Center and Online Writing Lab, campus outreach workshops, scholarship, and leadership on university committees.

Consultant Supervision – 60%

  • Develop and revise work schedules for on‑site and online consultants.
  • Serve as on‑site supervisor for Writing Center activities.
  • Coordinate in‑class workshops for students run by Writing Center consultants.
  • Answer questions and concerns of faculty and staff regarding the Writing Center.
  • Develop web‑based materials for the UWP/UWC/OWL website.
  • Assist with staff development, weekly staff meetings, and consultant preparation.
  • Assist with observation and evaluation of writing consultants.
  • Collaborate with the Director to develop the Online Writing Lab for distance education students.
  • Consult with students in onsite and online tutorial sessions.

Campus Outreach – 20%

  • Assist in developing and conducting workshops in the Digital Studio.
  • Support the development of outside programs and projects and seek new funding avenues.
  • Collaborate on grant writing projects and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with all UWP staff on data collection, assessment projects, and reporting.

Scholarship – 10%

  • Remain current in scholarship and research on writing, writing centers, tutor training, and digital composition.
  • Participate in local, regional, and national writing center conferences as presenter or discussant.
  • Author articles, chapters, or response pieces on the Assistant Director’s work.

Leadership – 10%

  • Suggest innovative methods for improving the Writing Center, Online Writing Lab, and Writing Program.
  • Participate on university committees as a representative of the Writing Program or Writing Center.

Minimum Education/Experience

Minimum qualification: MA in English or related field (e.g., rhetoric/composition or writing studies) from an accredited institution.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Preferred: Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric, 3+ years of writing center experience including administrative duties, experience with online writing labs, knowledge of writing center administration theories and practices, best practices for online instruction, digital literacies, and excellent written and oral communication skills.
