Library Assistant I – Fort Bragg, CA
Part‑time, permanent. Bi‑weekly 40 hours (approximately 20 hours per week). Salary: $20.53–$24.96 hourly.
Responsibilities
- Perform opening and closing procedures for the library.
- Greet visitors and provide information on library services and functions.
- Register new patrons and issue library cards; check library materials in and out, ensuring all materials are complete and in good condition.
- Process payments for late, lost, or damaged materials.
- Provide basic instruction on using the library catalog and electronic resources; answer routine reference questions, referring non‑routine questions to the Librarian.
- Assist patrons with basic technological support for computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and library applications; refer complex issues to higher‑level staff.
- Check shelves for missing materials and maintain accurate records; shelve and organize library materials, routing returned items to designated locations.
- Clean and repair discs using specialized equipment.
- Prepare basic reports as requested.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and one year of general office experience with public contact; OR any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Valid driver’s license preferred but not required.
- Basic customer service skills; ability to communicate with diverse populations.
- Knowledge of basic library methods and the Dewey Decimal System.
- Understanding of electronically based information systems related to library operations and services.
- Proficiency in typing correspondence and documents from rough drafts or printed text.
- Ability to operate and maintain general office machines and specialized library equipment.
- Physical ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands to reach and lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 45 pounds occasionally.

Benefits
Salary: $20.53–$24.96 hourly. Covered under Social Security and the 1937 act; employees and the County pay into the retirement fund. Mendocino County observes 11 paid holidays per year. Employees are granted 24–48 hours of personal leave annually, depending on Bargaining Unit. Accruals for part‑time employees working at least 20 hours per week are pro‑rated. Selection Procedure & Other Important Information
Qualifications Appraisal Panel Exam for qualified Library Assistant I applicants will be held November 17-19, 2025. Please note the dates are subject to change. You will be notified at least 7 days prior to the actual test date.
Examination Process
All complete applications will be reviewed; incomplete applications will not be considered. Based on the number of qualified candidates, applicants meeting the job requirements and qualifications will be invited to participate in an oral examination (weight 100) or an unassembled exam, consisting of an evaluation of education and experience as stated on the application form. The examination process will test the knowledge and abilities described above. A minimum score of 70 must be attained for placement on the employment list.
