Library Welcome Desk Attendant (Portal Monitor)
Stanford Libraries is seeking a part‑time Library Welcome Desk Attendant (Portal Monitor) to join the Access Services Team at the Cecil H. Green Library, Stanford’s largest library.
About the Position
As a member of the Access Services Department, you will provide high‑quality, just‑in‑time customer service to meet the academic and research needs of students, faculty, staff, affiliated scholars, and visitors of Stanford University.
Work Schedule
Academic year schedule (hours vary with the academic calendar):
- Wednesday 7:00 PM–12:45 AM (30‑min lunch)
- Thursday 7:00 PM–12:45 AM (30‑min lunch)
- Saturday 2:00 PM–6:45 PM (no lunch)
- Sunday 12:00 PM–5:00 PM (no lunch)
A total of 20.25 hours per week. This position is not eligible for remote or hybrid work.
Core Duties
- Monitor entrance and exit to the library, assisting guests with visitor registration software and checking government‑issued identification upon patron entrance.
- Visually inspect incoming visitor’s personal belongings to prevent banned materials from entering the library.
- Regularly perform baggage checks on all patrons exiting the building and visually inspect for any checked‑out library materials, referring patrons to the circulation desk as needed.
- Report any suspicious activity, building access violations, property loss, or emergency, including writing incident reports.
- Provide general directional assistance relating to the library and Stanford campus.
- Stay updated on policies and procedures by reviewing documentation, attending meetings, and reading email notifications.
- Record entrance statistics and gate counts on a daily basis.
- May help with building opening and closing procedures and keep the workspace clean, presentable, and safe.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- English language fluency; strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to articulate policies clearly.
- Professionalism, diplomacy, discretion, and sound judgment.
- Ability to prioritize tasks on‑the‑fly.
- Knowledge of Windows Operating System, web‑based applications, email, and calendar applications.
- Ability to learn and use Stanford‑specific computer applications, data entry, and web navigation.

Physical Requirements
- Constant standing/walking, performing desk‑based computer tasks.
- Occasional lifting and carrying of objects up to ten pounds.
- Visual acuity adequate for reading information at up to 30 feet.
- May be exposed to fluctuating temperatures and allergens.
