Medical Assistant (Dermatology) - Newport News, VA

Overview

The Medical Assistant will assist physicians and other providers by preparing procedure trays, ensuring adequate supplies, and providing patient care in our outpatient dermatology clinic.

Responsibilities

  • Assist providers with dermatology procedures and local anesthetic administration.
  • Prepare path/lab specimens and route to correct lab per insurance plan.
  • Obtain and record vital signs, triage patient concerns, and document intake in the EMR.
  • Organize patient flow, calibrate, clean, sterilize, and inventory all equipment and instruments.
  • Maintain medication supplies, infection control, and supply room stocking.
  • Respond to patient questions, phone messages, faxes, and interdepartmental mail in a timely manner.
  • Execute other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED; completion of a Medical Assistant or CNA program preferred.
  • 1-2 years recent experience as a Medical Assistant or CNA, dermatology experience preferred.
  • CPR certified preferred.
  • Ability to triage patient concerns, obtain vital signs, and prepare patients for appointments.
  • Experience administering injections and knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 codes.
  • Knowledge of office financial policies and basic computer skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; fluency in English.
  • Ability to work well in a high-paced, stressful environment and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to travel to satellite offices as needed.

Licensure/Certifications/Education

  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Program, Certified Nursing Assistant program, or a bachelor’s degree in pre-med or pre-physician assistant track preferred.
  • CPR certified preferred.
  • 1-2 years recent experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, or other clinical patient care experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in Dermatology is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Talking, bending, twisting, reaching, and balancing.
  • Use of hands and fingers.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
  • Risk of exposure to infectious organisms and chemicals and sharp objects.
