Weekend and evening hours required.

Answers basic reference and instructional questions at the service desk using print and non-print resources; assists patrons in using library computers, searching the library catalog, and locating and obtaining materials and information; assists reference staff with projects including the removal of outdated library materials and marketing of library materials and services to encourage use. Performs circulation tasks such as sorting and shelving books, checking out and receiving library materials, and issuing library cards.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Describes or demonstrates procedures for navigating the public access catalog, electronic resources, and the Internet. Explains and assists in the use of basic reference resources to locate information.
  • Answers inquiries of nonprofessional nature on telephone and in person and refers persons requiring professional assistance to appropriate librarian. Keeps record of questions asked.
  • Locates books and publications for customers.
  • Assists customers with computer use sign up and troubleshooting computer problems.
  • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services.
  • Utilizes reports to identify and retrieve books and other materials for review, searches for missing and lost materials, shelves and maintains proper order of library materials.
  • Assists with activities involved with interlibrary loan services, compilation of monthly and annual library statistics, non-fiction and reference collection development, serials collection development, and checking in serials and reporting missing issues.
  • Participates in library outreach programs.
  • Assembles and arranges displays of books and other library materials.
  • Inputs identifying data into computer from application cards to register borrowers; issues identification cards to customers according to established procedures. Records address or name changes into computer.
  • Checks out books to customers.
  • Inspects returned books for damage, verifies due date, and computes and receives overdue fines.
  • Sorts books, publications and other items according to classification code and returns them to shelves or other designated area.
  • Examines materials on shelves to verify accuracy of placement.
  • Operates cash register or drawer. Makes change, records amounts received, and issues receipts to customers.
  • Participates in special projects as requested.
  • Plans and performs library programs, as needed.
  • The employer may add or change duties at any time and as determined by the County and its leaders to best ensure that the public is served through the work of the Department.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree from an accredited college, university or technical school in business or public administration, or closely related field; AND
  • Two (2) years’ professional clerical, administrative, library, or related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses and Certifications

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Knowledge of project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Reliable full‑time attendance.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers or other library employees.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, the general public, library staff, and Boards of Directors.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute ratios, percent, and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Problem‑solving skills involving variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to distinguish colors displayed on computer screen for interpretation to library customers and staff and for technical support of library computer systems; sufficient peripheral vision to determine presence of library customers and staff in perimeter of work area, and ability to adjust focus for close vision of computer monitor and distant vision for staff entering work area.
  • Typing and word‑processing experience; knowledge of graphical operating system and computer operations, including use of mouse, creation of files and folders, and troubleshooting hardware and software problems; proficient in searching the Internet, Web, and electronic databases.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions

Work is primarily performed in an indoor, climate‑controlled environment and has moderate exposure to disagreeable elements (e.g., irate customers, extreme noise, heat, odors, heights and/or dust). This position requires stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, visual acuity (i.e., seeing up close, seeing far away, depth perception), kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions. Frequent lifting 10 to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. Employee must be able to push or pull a loaded two‑sided, six‑shelf book cart and occasionally retrieve library materials by climbing and/or reaching to top shelves of standard 84” library shelving and stooping to floor‑level shelves of library shelving and bottom drawers of file cabinets.

  • Weekend and evening hours required.

Work Location

Not Eligible for Remote Work – this position is assigned to a county worksite. Due to the non‑portable nature of the essential functions of this position, telework is not eligible.
