Position Summary
Under the guidance of the Associate Provost for Online Programs, the Instructional Designer is principally responsible for working with faculty to research, analyze, implement, evaluate, and support the effective use of technology and teaching in support of online and face‑to‑face learning. The position is engaged in a wide range of instructional activities focused on outcomes that improve understanding, better engage, and speed student learning. Activities include, but are not limited to, direct assistance and advanced consultation with faculty on instructional design for multiple delivery modes (face‑to‑face, blended, online; self‑learning, peer‑to‑peer, group); LMS and other teaching and learning systems administration; design and conduct presentations, workshops, discussions, and individualized meetings with faculty on teaching, learning, and technology.
Essential Functions
Assist, consult, and provide direct outreach to faculty in the analysis, design, development, implementation, and assessment of courses and instructional experiences in a wide range of delivery modes with explicit concern for their individual teaching goals.
Provide instructional design, consultation, support, and project management to faculty, programs, and departments for the conversion of courses and programs to innovative online and other technology‑assisted educational venues utilizing cutting‑edge and creative design and course delivery options.
Proactive consultation with faculty subject matter experts to identify and obtain course outcomes and content; draft storyboards and mock‑ups, and write and develop course content as needed.
Create, design, and lead presentations, workshops, discussions, and individualized meetings with faculty on instructional design, pedagogy, assessment, applications of instructional technology and a variety of related topics.
Assist faculty to deliver instruction in multiple modes. Provide faculty with a variety of strategies to manage student learning in digital environments and support faculty as they implement those strategies.
Collaborate with and support faculty in creating technology‑mediated learning experiences integrating a variety of graphics, audio, video, and interactive media, communications software, and emerging web tools into learning environments.
Assist faculty in discovering methods of improving their instruction with and without technology.
Partner with faculty, chairpersons, deans, Academic Affairs, Institutional Research and Planning, and other offices in an on‑going plan to assess and improve student learning outcomes.
Additional Functions
Keep current with emerging technologies, new products, methodologies, pedagogy, theories, applications and trends.
Provide support to the university community in the implementation of emerging technologies to support the creation and maintenance of teaching and learning spaces.
Work on specialized projects, complex projects and other duties as assigned.
Prerequisite Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in education, instructional design, or a related field.
Several years of experience working at an institute of higher education.
Expertise with a learning management system.
Experience working with faculty both one‑on‑one and in a group.
Experience designing and leading training workshops.
Expertise in the creation of instructional content using digital tools.
Proven ability to work well in a team environment; demonstrated creativity and problem solving skills; excellent oral and written communication skills.
At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in a related field.
Experience working with Canvas, Zoom, and Kaltura.
Experience designing and developing face‑to‑face or online courses; and teaching experience at the college level.
Salary Information
In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the negotiated annual salary range for this position is $63,754.42 – $119,012.58 (USD). This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
