Overview
Provides highly skilled technical expertise and oversees multiple design and/or complex building construction projects. Reports to a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Work requires contact with governmental agencies, consultants and construction firms. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence. Essential Duties
Coordinates design work among TxDOT entities, consultants and contractors. Designs projects, making design calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections. May serve as a lead worker or project leader. Receives project assignments, determines work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway. Reviews and compiles complete plan packages for submission to the responsible engineer or architect for review and signature. Reviews environmental documents. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies. Experience: 8 years of experience in design, plan preparation, construction inspection, surveying. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Competencies
Computer-aided drafting and design systems Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities Applicable computer software applications and hardware Americans with Disabilities Act, modifications and requirements including accessibility standards Higher mathematics Performing advanced drafting Prioritizing projects/workload and meeting deadlines Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs Standing-prolonged periods of time Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading Conditions of Employment

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. A mathematical simulation will be part of the interview process. Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
