Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The James E. Shepard Memorial Library provides resources and services that support the University's educational, research, cultural and public service objectives. This mission strengthens NCCU’s mission by providing students—on‑campus, distance, graduate, and professional—with physical space, resources, specialized personnel, and services to engage in teaching and research. The Library collaborates with various academic units to ensure the holistic development of NCCU students across academic and professional programs.

Primary Purpose of Position

Under the limited supervision of the Technical Services Librarian, the University Library Technician (Cataloger) performs two broad functions. First, cataloging of books, monographs, serials, and audiovisual materials—original and copy—using AACR2 and RDA, and vendor tools. Experience with OCLC WorldShare Management Services (WMS) and Library of Congress (LC) is expected. Second, the position is responsible for instituting and receiving orders of new library materials, maintaining the library’s integrated automation system (ALMA, ExLibris), and providing library database and electronic collections maintenance. Additional duties include formulating departmental policies and circulation/reference desk coverage. The role requires tact and courtesy in frequent public contact.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of circulation processes such as check‑in/checkout.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) proficiency.
  • Shelf reading, shelving, inventory, and preparation of monthly reports.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. and assist students with library databases and print resources.
  • Train work‑study students in the Government Documents Department and comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Independence with minimal supervision, initiative, and project completion.
  • Analytical and organizational skills, plus strong written and oral communication, editing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible work schedules and ability to handle high‑pressure environments.

High school diploma or equivalency and at least two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Work Hours

Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; some night and/or weekend work is required.
