University Library Technician
The University Library Technician (Cataloger) supports the mission of North Carolina Central University by providing cataloging, circulation, and database services to the university community.
Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Technical Services Librarian, the Technician performs original and copy cataloging of books, monographs, serials, and audiovisual materials. The role involves maintaining authority control using AACR2 and RDA, managing orders of new library materials, and working with the library’s integrated automation system (ALMA/ExLibris). Other duties include maintaining electronic collections, formulating departmental policies, and providing coverage at the circulation and reference desks.
Primary Purpose of Position
To ensure the library’s resources are accurately categorized, readily available, and effectively managed in accordance with current bibliographic practices.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience with OCLC WorldShare Management Services (WMS) and Library of Congress (LC) practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and library circulation processes.
- Knowledge of shelf reading, shelving, and inventory management.
- Ability to prepare monthly reports and assist students with library databases and print resources.
- Strong written and oral communication, client service, and organizational skills.
- Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs and work flexible schedules.
Minimum Education/Experience
High school diploma or equivalency with two years of experience in library services, office support, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Work Hours
Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; occasional night or weekend work and working during adverse weather or emergencies as required.
Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies
- Produce accurate and thorough cataloging records using AACR2 and RDA.
- Maintain authority control and update the library’s integrated automation system.
- Manage material orders and ensure timely receipt and accession.
- Assist with database and electronic collection maintenance.
- Provide circulation and reference desk service, including troubleshooting and customer service.
- Develop and enforce departmental policies and procedures.
- Assist and train work‑study students in library services.
- Prepare and report monthly statistics and professional development activities.
- Exhibit judgment, initiative, and a strong commitment to ethical conduct and professional standards.
