Under direct supervision, performs a variety of library‑specific clerical tasks. This is a part‑time as needed position. Hours are not guaranteed. The work schedule may include weekday/weekend or evening shifts and may not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year.

Responsibilities

  • Operates the Integrated Library System computer terminals to locate, check in and check out library materials; performs patron registration and other basic functions; maintains confidentiality of borrower records.
  • Answers customers by providing routine information, answering general informational questions, and referring customers to appropriate resources and library services.
  • Handles money for fines, reserves, or other purposes.
  • Issues and renews library cards; processes, repairs, or discards books and other library materials.
  • Assists users with self‑service technology.
  • Files; alphabetizes; searches for bibliographic information
  • Shelves returned materials and performs other clerical duties as needed.
  • Conduct and process passport services when assigned.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of routine library specific clerical tasks and simple arithmetical functions.
  • Ability to operate machines and computers and perform basic office procedures.
  • Ability to alphabetize and perform other clerical tasks.
  • Meet the public with tact and courtesy and work harmoniously with other staff.
  • Handle telephone calls in a personable manner.
  • Ability to type accurately and at a reasonable rate of speed.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Experience delivering quality customer service is highly desirable.

In addition, a Library Clerk assigned to passport services must meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a United States citizen or U.S. national
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be able to pass the Department of State Passport Acceptance Agent Training for New Agents. Completion of exam is required if hired.

Physical Requirements

The physical tasks of this position include sitting at a desk and computer terminal, walking, reaching, lifting, turning and twisting, bending and stooping, pushing and pulling, using small tools. Sitting, standing and walking can each be for sustained periods of time from one to two hours; reaching to shelf height of seven feet; lifting an average of 20 pounds; pushing and pulling objects including carts with a force of up to 60 pounds. Each physical task occurs in variations throughout the day.

Vision requirements include ability to read books, magazines, and other printed materials; computer screens, signage, etc.

Hearing and speaking requirements include ability to communicate effectively and in a timely manner over the telephone, person to person with the public and co‑workers and to groups.

Exempt/Non‑Exempt

This is a non‑exempt position. Overtime at the rate of one and one‑half times the hourly rate of the classification is paid for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week.

Background Check/Physical Exam

Individuals selected for employment will be required to take and pass a background check (fingerprinting) for all positions and medical exam for full time and permanent part time positions. The background check and medical examination are at City expense; and conducted by a law enforcement agency and physician designated by the City. Candidates who are currently working are urged not to resign until they have successfully passed the background check, physical examination and received a final offer letter.
