Job Description
Mid-Level Tech Writer
– Suitland, MD office. ECS Federal requires a skilled Cybersecurity Technical Writer for a long‑term contract with a U.S. Government civilian agency. This full‑time, permanent role focuses on creating, editing, and maintaining cybersecurity documentation.
Responsibilities
Develop and Maintain Cybersecurity Documentation
Create documents that convert complex system/network information into visual diagrams such as data flows and network diagrams for on‑prem and cloud systems.
Produce clear, concise technical documentation – architecture diagrams, system descriptions, security control details, and operational runbooks.
Maintain response plans, policies, procedures, standards, security assessments, incident response plans, user manuals, and training materials.
Prepare user‑friendly guides, FAQs, and knowledge‑base articles for internal and external stakeholders.
Information Gathering and Analysis
Collaborate closely with cybersecurity engineers, architects, analysts, and other SMEs to gather technical information.
Research cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities, technologies, and industry trends to keep documentation current.
Analyze existing documentation for gaps and areas for improvement.
Produce system connection diagrams for multiple systems.
Communication and Collaboration
Translate technical information into accessible language for diverse audiences.
Facilitate reviews and approvals of documentation with relevant stakeholders.
Participate in cybersecurity projects, providing documentation support throughout the lifecycle.
Quality Assurance and Standards
Ensure documentation adheres to style guides, templates, and branding.
Maintain version control for all documents.
Continuously improve documentation processes and tools.
Apply diagram and visual standards across all systems.
Salary Range $90,000 - $105,000
Required Skills
Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Communications, English, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field.
Fundamental technical knowledge of cloud and network topologies, and database management.
4+ years of technical writing experience, with at least 2 years focused on cybersecurity or IT security documentation.
Strong understanding of cybersecurity concepts, terminology, and best practices.
Proficiency with documentation tools and content management systems.
Strong portfolio of technical writing samples demonstrating clarity, accuracy, and adherence to style guides.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
Intermediate knowledge of Visio and/or other diagram and vector application tools.
Certifications / Licenses
Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
Desired Skills
CompTIA Security+, CySA+, Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC), or similar certifications.
Experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
Familiarity with GRC frameworks and tools.
Experience scripting (e.g., Python, PowerShell) for automating documentation tasks or data extraction.
