Mid-Level Tech Writer
Description: ECS is seeking a skilled Cybersecurity Technical Writer to work in our Suitland, MD office. The role supports a long‑term contract with a U.S. Government civilian agency, focusing on a comprehensive range of cybersecurity services. The writer will create, edit, and maintain a wide range of documentation, ensuring clear communication of our cybersecurity posture across the organization.
Responsibilities
Develop and Maintain Cybersecurity Documentation
Create documents that convert complex system/network information into visual diagrams such as data flows, network diagrams, and system interconnections for multiple on‑prem and cloud systems.
Produce clear, concise, and accurate technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, system descriptions, security control implementation details, and operational runbooks.
Develop and maintain documentation such as response plans, policies, procedures, standards, security assessments, incident response plans, user manuals, and training materials.
Prepare user‑friendly guides, FAQs, and knowledge base articles for internal and external stakeholders.
Information Gathering and Analysis
Collaborate closely with cybersecurity engineers, architects, analysts, and other SMEs to gather technical information and understand complex concepts.
Conduct research on cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities, technologies, and industry trends to keep documentation current and relevant.
Analyze existing documentation for gaps, inconsistencies, and areas for improvement.
Produce system connections through diagram visualizations across multiple systems.
Communication and Collaboration
Translate highly technical information into accessible language for diverse audiences, including technical staff, management, and end‑users.
Facilitate reviews and approvals of documentation with relevant stakeholders.
Participate in cybersecurity projects and initiatives, providing documentation support throughout the lifecycle.
Quality Assurance and Standards
Ensure all documentation adheres to established style guides, templates, and branding.
Implement and maintain version control for documents.
Continuously improve documentation processes and tools.
Apply consistent diagram and visual standards across all systems.
Salary Range:
$90,000 - $105,000
Required Skills
Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, Communications, English, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field.
Fundamental technical knowledge in cloud and network topologies, as well as database management.
4+ years of technical writing experience, with at least 2 years focused on cybersecurity or IT security documentation.
Demonstrated understanding of cybersecurity concepts, terminology, and best practices.
Proficiency with documentation tools and content management systems.
Strong portfolio of technical writing samples demonstrating clarity, accuracy, and adherence to style guides.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
Intermediate knowledge and use of Visio and/or other diagram and vector application software tools.
Certifications / Licenses
Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
Desired Skills
Certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CySA+, Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC), or similar.
Experience with Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
Familiarity with GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) frameworks and tools.
Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) for automating documentation tasks or data extraction.
