Job Description

About the Role

The A/ V Technician On Call will perform a variety of job functions: setting up and striking A/V equipment, providing expert technical A/V and production support for events at The Huntington, and ensuring proper care and maintenance of A/V equipment, including strike and stowage. The A/ V Technician will play an important role in internal and external event production and will provide technical assistance and instruction for employees, visiting presenters, and outside clients of The Huntington. In addition to event setups and strikes, the A/ V Technician will be responsible for operating theater lighting, projection, and audio systems in The Huntington’s event spaces and providing the A/V support for lectures, conferences, and performances.

This is an on-call position, with no set weekly hours.

Essential Duties

  • Setup & strike of A/V equipment for meetings and various functions in accordance with the schedule of events and in coordination with Huntington departments and crew
  • Read and interpret room diagrams & setup sheets with respect to A/V setups
  • Assist departmental planners and clients with A/V run-throughs to ensure comfort of presenters. Provide basic instruction on the operation of A/V equipment as necessary
  • Troubleshoot A/V equipment when there are technical questions or problems related to A/V and identify and communicate appropriate solutions
  • Serve as on-site dedicated A/V technical support for events and embody the high standard of service and quality set forth for A/V production for The Huntington and our clients
  • Operate theater lighting & sound boards to support events in the auditorium space
  • Clean and maintain equipment, report damages to the Audio-Visual and Production Manager
  • Assist in the production and maintenance of A/V operating manuals
  • Other duties as assigned

Candidate Requirements And Experience

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Must have skilled knowledge of Audio/Visual equipment including but not limited to: projectors, computers (Mac and PC), presentation software, installed and portable PA systems, microphones, conference systems, audio capture, lighting and sound boards
  • Experience with video streaming and capture is preferred
  • Experience with virtual/hybrid event support is preferred
  • Some knowledge of theater lighting is preferred
  • Strong oral communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills
  • Flexible hours for availability (including evenings and weekends)
  • Positive client-oriented attitude and professional image
  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Experience

  • Two plus years of prior A/V and event production experience
  • A/V production experience in a university or venue setting preferred
  • Experience operating Crestron A/V equipment a plus
  • Theater experience in lighting and/or sound is a plus

Working Conditions

  • This is a variable on-call position. Hours will vary from week to week depending on event scheduling and will generally be set at least 1-2 weeks before an event. Extensive evening and weekend work is required.
  • Occasional stooping. Frequent standing. Constant walking, sitting, climbing, reaching high/low levels, finger movement, hearing conversationally, seeing far and near, ability to navigate heights and small spaces. Ability to lift A/V and computer equipment up to 50 pounds. Ability to navigate catwalks and ladders.
