Position Purpose
Reporting to the Senior Production Manager, this position is classified as IATSE. The Master Technician provides technical support to meet complex audio and lighting requirements through a master’s level of skill in all aspects of the trade. The Hopkins Center presents and produces live arts events of all genres as well as supports college events and functions. This 0.75 FTE, nine‑month position is regularly scheduled to work at least forty (40) hours per week from September through May.
Required Qualifications
Education & Years of Experience
- Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Associate’s degree in Technical Theater or equivalent
- Three years of experience in technical production of the performing arts
- Proficiency with ETC lighting console programming
- Possession of a valid U.S. driver’s license and compliance with Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy
- Current technical knowledge of theatrical and concert lighting, carpentry, and video, including applicable software programs
- Ability to train and oversee student and Union personnel in lighting, carpentry, and video technologies
- Basic knowledge of concert and theatrical sound equipment
- Familiarity with safe transport procedures for musical equipment
- Familiarity with computers and software including Microsoft Office, Google, and other cloud‑based platforms
- Membership in IATSE required upon hiring
- Demonstrated collaborative and diplomatic work style
- Commitment to anti‑bias, anti‑racist equity practices (related training a plus)
- Physical requirements: frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, standing; regular lifting up to 50 lb; exposure to electricity; high‑altitude work on ladders, rigging grids; truck driving up to 28 ft (non‑CDL)
- Irregular hours including nights and weekends
- Use of protective gear (gloves, goggles, masks, ear plugs) as required
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theatre or equivalent
- 5 years of experience in technical production for live arts
- Proficiency with Lightwright, Vectorworks, Adobe Creative Suite
- Proficiency with Wireless Workbench, Dante Virtual Soundcard, Logic software
- Experience with computer networking of theatrical equipment in live arts
- Experience with online streaming and video production front‑end and back‑end software and services

Key Accountabilities
Sound/Audio Support
Responsible for design, operation, oversight, and execution of sound system requirements for Hopkins Center rehearsals, performances, and events. Includes analog/digital mixing consoles, front‑of‑house and monitor speakers, microphones, wireless coordination, communication systems, multi‑track recording, Mac & Windows based computers, audio software, compression, gate, limiter, effects, and equalizers. Determines sound system layout, speaker selection, microphone types and locations, and creates input/output documentation. Percentage of Time: 30%
Lighting Support
Design, execute, and participate in all aspects of lighting instrumentation for events. Includes programming and operating lighting consoles, hanging and focusing equipment from heights via ladders, lifts, and catwalks. Understands lighting plots, paperwork, and creates lighting looks for lectures, dance, and theatrical productions. Percentage of Time: 30%
Video Support
Install and operate video projectors, displays, and cameras. Perform basic video editing for live presentation media and assist with PowerPoint and other digital media. Supports virtual and live‑streamed events. Percentage of Time: 20%
Carpentry/Repair/Maintenance and Miscellaneous Support
Install and assemble scenery, staging, and instrument setup. Operate and support counterweight fly systems, load weights for flying scenery, and other electrics. Maintain audio, lighting, and stage equipment and revise policies. Manage inventory of audio supplies, advise on lighting and stage supplies, and assist in vehicle loading/unloading. Operate rental vehicles for transportation to remote performance locations. Percentage of Time: 15%
Training/Coaching/Safety
Direct and oversee student and Union work crews, monitor progress, coordinate with departments to ensure schedules and specifications. Provide instruction to visiting personnel and production staff as needed. Support safety procedures and CPR training for full‑time technicians. Percentage of Time: 5%
