Responsibilities
- Performs professional work of moderate difficulty in providing casework services to offenders; performs other work as assigned or required. This is a Working/Journey position, working under general supervision. Assigned duties include acting as a mentor in the development of officers. Uses judgment in selecting guidelines and applying policies and procedures. Significant deviations from established work processes require prior approval. Work produced and decisions made affect non-routine operations of the work unit. Applies knowledge to diversified subjects, requiring some judgment in applying procedures and guidelines.
- Supervises a caseload of assigned offenders.
- Conducts interviews.
- Conducts social investigations or assessments to determine risk factors.
- Evaluates offender progress.
- Develops individual offender treatment programs and establishes timelines for completion.
- Reviews and evaluates criminal records, police reports, psychiatric and psychological reports.
- Coordinates supervision and services with other agencies; makes referrals to other agencies.
- Writes social history and progress reports.
- Confer with department personnel to provide technical advice and resolve problems; outline work plan and assign duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority.
- Provides input to the Unit Supervisor on staff performance.
- Determine feasibility of initiating new programs and expanding existing programs; develop and implement procedures and operations.
- Direct and coordinate activities of department personnel; establish work plan and staffing; supervise staff as assigned.
- May review and approve work in the supervisor’s absence; review status reports and adjust schedules or plans as required.
- Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.
- Must be able to drive continuously, up to four hours at a time, to various locations throughout the County; must maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s license.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Social Services, or related field.
- Four (4) years of criminal justice or social work experience.
- Valid Arizona State Driver’s License required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.
Special Requirements
- Must pass a thorough background investigation.
- Knowledge of laws, principles, and practices of offender supervision; knowledge of human behavior; knowledge of the criminal justice system and community resources; knowledge of search, transportation, and restraint procedures; knowledge of counseling and interviewing techniques.
- Skills in personal interaction, counseling and interviewing; ability to critically analyze individuals and situations and make sound decisions; ability to apply rehabilitation principles; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to follow instructions; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Physical Demands
The work is sedentary and may require lifting up to 10 pounds occasionally; repetitive motion; ability to hear, speak, and maintain mental and visual acuity.
