As a Library Assistant, you will:

  • Provide excellent customer service to patrons of all ages and backgrounds
  • Check materials in and out and assist with issuing library cards
  • Accept payment for fines and fees
  • Maintain accurate patron records and assist with account questions
  • Help patrons locate materials and assist with basic catalog searches
  • Refer patrons to other staff members as needed for more in-depth assistance
  • Assist with shelving, organizing, and shifting materials to maintain collection order
  • Perform daily circulation functions, including running reports and checking shelves
  • Maintain tidiness and presentation of displays and collection
  • Assist in preparing and leading library programs for the public
  • Participate in library outreach events
  • May support deposit collection through deliveries
  • Address patron questions about library services and refer appropriately
  • May be trained to assist with advanced reader’s advisory and reference questions from patrons
  • May assist patrons with using self-checkout machines, catalog computers, and copying/printing
  • May order branch office supplies

To succeed in this role, you’ll need strong communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively with a team, and a commitment to providing inclusive service to a diverse community. You should be comfortable engaging with patrons of all ages, including children, teens, and those who speak languages other than English. Initiative, creativity, and flexibility are key—along with a willingness to grow and learn.

Spanish language skills are a plus.

Minimum Qualifications:

You need any combination of education and experience that is equal to:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • One year of professional, fast‑paced customer service experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of education beyond high school (Associate’s degree or equivalent coursework)
  • Three or more years of customer service experience
  • Previous library experience
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License

Work Schedule:

Part‑time, not benefit‑eligible, 40 hours bi‑weekly, with variable hours that may include evenings, Saturdays, and some Sundays.

Location Flexibility:

Employees may be reassigned temporarily or permanently to other locations in the system based on operational needs.
