Overview
The Cape Cod Times, part of Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a digitally savvy journalist to be our next cops and courts reporter covering impactful news for our readers. The reporter will cover the police beat, public safety and criminal and civil cases related to Cape Cod in state trial courts and federal courts. The ideal candidate will be organized, able to turn around quick stories, and possess the creativity of a storyteller. We balance daily reporting with longer-term reporting based on data analysis, public records and interviews. The courts and cops reporter may also cover general assignment stories.
Scope: Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket residents and readership extend across New England and beyond.
We are looking for a candidate who lives on Cape Cod or nearby in the South Shore or Southcoast.
Responsibilities
- Cover the police beat, public safety and criminal and civil cases related to Cape Cod in state trial courts and federal courts.
- Track and plan coverage of cases as they proceed through the courts; talk to attorneys, police, bar associations, and district attorneys.
- Break news quickly and balance daily reporting with longer-term investigations based on data analysis and public records.
- Potentially cover general assignment stories as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- High-level writing, communication and time management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline and collaborate with newsroom staff.
- Ability to produce content that is engaging, clean, accurate and publication-ready.
- Comfort with using social media to enhance reporting and promote stories.
- Understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
