Overview
Work Location: 1301 Barcarrota Ave, Bradenton, Florida 34205
Work Hours: 27 hours/week, with variable daytime hours.
Expected Starting Hourly Range: $23.67 - $29.59
This classification performs a variety of technical/professional duties in the Manatee County Public Library System. Supervision may be exercised over library support staff. Work involves working both with the public and behind the scenes, handling branch and/or section responsibilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian II or Librarian III.
Working Conditions
Indoor/Office situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 25 lbs. alone; up to 50 lbs. with assistance.
Position
Cataloger Librarian I
- Processes new, donated, and existing library materials.
- Conducts regular physical processing and maintenance of circulating items, as well as bibliographic and item maintenance of records in the catalog.
- Communicates with representatives of library branches to verify maintenance requests and changes to classifications within the collection.
- Experience with OCLC Connexion Client, metadata editing tools, MARC records and cataloging rules preferred.
Essential Functions

- Provides reference and readers advisory services to the general public.
- Develops pathfinders, bibliographies, brochures, booklets and newsletters.
- Performs basic cataloging and/or routine circulation tasks.
- Compiles bibliographies, bookmarks, reading lists, etc., as necessary.
- May plan, coordinate, and present adult and juvenile programming, both inside the library and in community facilities, as requested.
- May act as library liaison to community groups as necessary. Develops community contacts.
- Maintains currency in professional library issues, developments, materials, and equipment with emphasis on current and future trends in technology and literacy. Attends training and meetings; in addition to, participating in professional library organizations.
- Participates in collection management routines.
- Assists and instructs patrons in the use of library services, resources and technology.
- Interprets and enforces relevant Library/County policies and procedures to the public. Recommends policy changes to immediate supervisor or administration.
- Aids in coordinating work of volunteer, clerical and professional staff. May schedule, train and/or supervise clerical staff, volunteers, public service workers, and AARP workers.
- Regularly attends and is available during operating hours. May be assigned to any Manatee County Public Library System location.
- Coordinates informational and recreational programs and participates in computer instruction classes.
- Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in library and information science from an accredited graduate program, or bachelor’s degree and enrolled in an accredited MLS/MLIS program with the ability to obtain an MLS/MLIS within twelve (12) months of hire.
- Valid driver license required, with valid Florida driver license required within 30 days of hire.
Supplemental Information
Prior library work experience desired.

- Knowledge of automated systems with regard to library procedures and services.
- Ability to perform library technical tasks.
- Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds, push book truck, and shelve books.
