Position Title

Cataloger Librarian I

Job Overview

This classification performs a variety of technical and professional duties in the Manatee County Public Library System. The role includes cataloging, reference services, circulation support, and community program coordination. Supervision may occur over library support staff. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Librarian II or Librarian III.

Responsibilities

  • Process new, donated, and existing library materials.
  • Conduct regular physical processing and maintenance of circulating items.
  • Maintain bibliographic and item records in the catalog.
  • Communicate with library branches to verify maintenance requests and classification changes.
  • Provide reference and readers‑advisory services to the general public.
  • Develop pathfinders, bibliographies, brochures, booklets, and newsletters.
  • Perform basic cataloging and/or routine circulation tasks.
  • Compile bibliographies, bookmarks, and reading lists as needed.
  • Plan, coordinate, and present adult and juvenile programming both within the library and in community facilities.
  • Serve as library liaison to community groups and develop community contacts.
  • Maintain currency in professional library issues, trends in technology and literacy; attend training and meetings.
  • Participate in collection management routines.
  • Assist and instruct patrons in the use of library services, resources, and technology.
  • Interpret and enforce Library/County policies and procedures; recommend policy changes.
  • Assist and supervise clerical, volunteer, public service, and AARP staff; schedule, train, and supervise as required.
  • Maintain availability during operating hours; may be assigned to any library system location.
  • Coordinate informational and recreational programs and participate in computer instruction classes.
  • Perform other related duties, including weather or emergency duties, as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited graduate program, or a bachelor’s degree with enrollment in an accredited MLS/MLIS program and the ability to obtain an MLS/MLIS within 12 months of hire.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
  • Experience with OCLC Connexion Client, metadata editing tools, MARC records, and cataloging rules preferred.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work rotating schedules, including days, nights, and weekends.

Supplemental Information

Prior library work experience desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of modern library science principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of automated library systems and related procedures.
  • Ability to perform technical library tasks and to use computer applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with public and staff.
  • Ability to supervise and train staff, public, and volunteers.
  • Ability to work rotating schedules, including days, nights, and weekends.
  • Ability to acquire special driver’s license if required.
