WSP is currently initiating a search for an Aviation Senior Project Design Manager for our Northeast/New England region, with a focus on projects in New York, Connecticut, Boston and Rhode Island. In this role, you will lead high-profile aviation design projects across the country while driving business development efforts to expand WSP’s presence in the aviation sector. This is an opportunity to work with a dynamic team on transformative aviation infrastructure projects while engaging with clients, pursuing new opportunities, and shaping the future of aviation design.
Your Impact
Manage the design process to ensure adherence with all codes, stakeholder requirements, and project-specific design standards.
Consult with clients on the implementation of on-call designer's project task orders.
Provide and coordinate technical responses to inquiries from contractors, tenants, consultants, and other regulatory agencies.
Proactively collaborate with multiple design teams to ensure alignment with program requirements and communicate potential project risks.
Lead the early identification of project design goals and work with Project Managers to guide design to meet those goals.
Organize and oversee design and constructability reviews of several concurrent projects.
Assist with evaluation of change order requests, requests for information, and other change issues.
Support construction administration tasks, including review of submittals, RFIs, and field changes to ensure compliance with design intent and project requirements.
Coordinate with construction teams to provide technical guidance, address design-related issues, and facilitate smooth project execution.
Ensure final project deliverables (As-Builts & O&M Manuals) are delivered in a timely manner and meet project governance requirements.
Provide risk management feedback on all assigned projects during design and into construction.
Assist in the permitting and planning of design processes to support AHJ review schedules.
Support business development efforts, including pursuits, proposal writing, and client engagement.
Collaborate with marketing and technical teams to develop winning proposals, presentations, and qualifications packages.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline.
Knowledge and familiarity with FAA design standards and aviation-specific criteria (e.g., FAA Advisory Circulars, Engineering Briefs, and airfield design best practices).
12+ years of relevant post-education experience in civil engineering, with a focus on aviation or transportation infrastructure.
Proven ability to manage complex design processes and coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
Maturity in interaction and ability to operate self-sufficiently in the field.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Knowledgeable of current technology with the ability to utilize it effectively on projects.
Ability to manage concurrent design processes and identify impacts projects may have on each other.
Experience supporting or leading business development activities, including proposal writing and pursuit strategy.
Experience in construction administration tasks, including reviewing submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience with the design and construction of airport facilities, including runways, taxiways, aprons, roadways, and terminal infrastructure.
Familiarity with permitting processes and regulatory agencies at the federal, state, and local levels.
Experience working with local municipalities and agencies in the Northeast/New England region (New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island).
