Position Overview

Salary range: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University of California academic salary scales. A reasonable estimate for this position is $165,000-$190,000.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: As soon as Fall 2025. Exact start date negotiable.

Position duration: Full-time career appointment.

The C.V. Starr East Asian Library (EAL) at UC Berkeley is a leading research library with over 1.2 million print volumes, 1 million ebooks, and numerous special collections. The Director will be a thought leader in East Asian scholarship, manage a diverse staff, oversee a $2.8 million budget, and represent the library nationally and internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Lead management of the East Asian Library, including staff of 5 librarians and 1 curator.
  • Oversee budgeting, collection development, fundraising, public relations, and partnership with other UC campuses.
  • Represent the Library in campus, national, and international forums.
  • Collaborate with the Associate University Librarian for Special Collections.
  • Participate in library-wide program coordination and decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies and background check requirements.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

Advanced degree (MA, PhD, or equivalent) by application date.

Additional Qualifications (minimum requirements)

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field and/or ALA‑accredited Master’s or equivalent degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years experience leading a unit/program in an academic library, research center, or equivalent, with demonstrated leadership and staff supervision.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in one or more East Asian languages.
