Job Summary
The FDNY is the largest fire department in the United States and plays a crucial role in protecting life and property in New York City. The Director of Radio Shop Operations reports directly to the Executive Director of Radio Repair Operations and oversees the daily technical operations of FDNY’s radio repair shop, ensuring reliable communications for emergency services.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee programming, updates, encryption, and testing of all radio and communication systems.
 - Provide technical oversight of the Radio Repair Unit and assign mechanic tasks.
 - Coordinate scheduling and oversight of work assignments for the Emergency Communications Transformations Program (ECTP).
 - Participate in the evaluation and scheduling of new equipment, systems, and special projects.
 - Ensure compliance with industry standards, FCC rules, and regulations.
 - Lead innovation and advanced diagnostics as the SME on radio matters.
 - Guide technical standards, engineering, and project management for critical infrastructure sites such as airports and tunnels.
 - Serve as a subject matter expert on RF technologies and emerging communication technologies relevant to public safety operations.
 - Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of technicians.
 
Minimum Qualifications
- A Federal Communications Commission Radio Telephone General Class Operator’s License with a radar endorsement.
 - At least nine years of recent experience in the repair and maintenance of communications equipment, with a minimum of 18 months in an administrative, managerial, or supervisory capacity.
 - Education and experience equivalent to the above, with up to eight years of education for four years of experience (excluding the required 18 months of supervisory experience).
 
License Requirement
- A valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.
 
Preferred Skills
- A First Class FCC Radiotelephone License with radar endorsement.
 - At least ten years of recent experience, including five years in management and administration of communications equipment repair and maintenance.
 - Strong leadership and personnel management skills, with experience supervising a team of radio repair technicians.
 - Ability to motivate and manage diverse teams in a fast‑paced environment.

$68,213.00 – $187,716.00
