Paraeducator – 1:1 Social Communication (SC)

Position within the South Kitsap School District. Reports to the Building Principal and operates under the Office of Special Services. Classified as a salaried position with an hourly rate of $72.00/hr. Salary schedule: Schedule A‑Sup/Inst. Employment type: Classified. FLSA status: Hourly. Hours per day: 6.25. Days per year: 181 (+11 Holidays) = 192.

Position Overview

This role supports the instructional program in assigned classrooms, focusing on special needs students and implementing social communication, pragmatics, and behavior supports. The job is distinguished by emphasizing explicit instruction in social skills, communication strategies, and academic instruction at individual skill levels.

Core Responsibilities

  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher.
  • Assist with implementation of IEPs and specialized instructional plans.
  • Attend meetings and trainings (first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, de‑escalation).
  • Develop and implement individualized instruction for academic, daily living, physical, communication, and behavior/social skill activities.
  • Implement behavioral plans for students with behavioral disorders as designed by the IEP team.
  • Maintain confidentiality under HIPAA, FERPA, and IEP guidelines.
  • Maintain instructional materials, records, and documentation.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods across varied school settings.
  • Collect and record data to support student progress.
  • Provide clerical support, including data entry, correspondence, filing, and material preparation.
  • Supervise and encourage peer and staff interactions to support social communication skills.
  • Work under both direct and indirect supervision using standardized routines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned; may serve as a 1:1 paraeducator for a student.

  • Adherence to safety practices and use of standard office equipment.
  • Basic math, reading, writing, and speaking skills.
  • Instructional procedures and practices; age‑appropriate student activities.
  • Safety practices and procedures, conflict resolution, and child development stages.
  • De‑escalation strategies.
  • Scheduling, data collection, and use of job‑related equipment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, communicate with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality, and work as part of a team.

Work Environment

Typical physical demands include occasional lifting, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, fine finger dexterity, and contact with hazardous chemicals/systems. The job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (minimum).
  • Paraeducator Certificate Program preferred.
  • Pass a ParaPro assessment or hold an associate degree or higher, or have earned 72 quarter credits/48 semester credits at the 100 level or above.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of insurability.
  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • De‑escalation and restraint training.
  • Background clearance: Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint clearance.
