Summary Of Primary Function/General Purpose Of Position

Under the supervision of Library Services leadership, the Health Sciences Librarian assists library patrons with reference questions and literature searches. The Librarian develops and promotes library programs, instructional materials, and Libguides. The Librarian supports Academic Affairs projects and committees as assigned by the Director.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists patrons with questions, identifying potential information sources, literature searching and database instruction for students and faculty.
  • Conducts one‑on‑one research consultations for students, residents, fellows, faculty and associates.
  • Conducts mediated searches for faculty research projects.
  • Responds to chat, e‑mail, telephone and in‑person requests for information and research at the information desk.
  • Develops and implements programs and tutorials to increase awareness of library resources.
  • Creates instructional materials such as displays, handouts, and Libguides to highlight collections and services.
  • Contributes to collection development decisions for physical and online collections.
  • Assists with cataloging of library resources and the archives.
  • Prepares reports regarding library operations and projections.

Employment Qualifications

Education Qualifications

Required Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree with experience. Specialty/Major: Arts in Library Technology or Library Science. Preferred: Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science. Specialty/Major: Library and Information Science.

Licensing/Certification

Licensure/Certification Required: N/A. Licensure/Certification Preferred: N/A.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Years and Type of Experience: 3‑5 years’ experience working in professional libraries (required). Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a higher education setting (preferred).

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Strong computer skills, Microsoft programs, familiarity with OhioLink, catalog systems, EBSCO database and online reference tools.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: Excellent written and oral communication skills; experience with bibliographic instruction, library orientations, and presentations; familiarity with Libguides and other library software tools.

Working Conditions

Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. General office environment. May have periods of constant interruptions. Prolonged periods of working alone. May be required to travel occasionally (not to exceed 10% travel).

  • Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
