Under the general supervision of the County Librarian, this position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of a small or medium branch library. The role performs high-level library duties and related duties as required. Depending upon experience, training, and education, an individual would enter at the Librarian I, II, or III level. I and II are the first levels in the supervisory series; III is the highest level. Incumbents have independent responsibilities for the operation and staff supervision of a branch library and perform the more difficult paraprofessional library duties, following procedures established by professional librarians. As experience is gained and/or education obtained, incumbents may move upward in the series, depending upon favorable job evaluations.
Responsibilities
- All duties of Branch Library Specialist positions
 - Manage the operation of a small branch library. For Librarian I, assist the Supervising Librarian at the Bishop branch and manage that branch in the absence of the Supervising Librarian; staff the circulation desk; advise and assist patrons; resolve problems and complaints when necessary.
 - Perform library reference work; research reference requests; obtain library materials and information not in the local branch.
 - Maintain ongoing inventory of the branch’s collection; recommend acquisition of new materials; supervise withdrawal of outdated materials.
 - Participate in interview processes to select new employees; train and supervise regular staff and volunteers; provide written evaluations when required.
 - Perform notification and collection of fines; ensure the facility is neat, orderly, and safe; maintain records such as circulation figures, fines, and reference questions; write news releases and book reviews.
 - Participate in special projects (e.g., planning for automation) and plan/conduct special programs and activities.
 - Represent the branch in the local community and act as an advocate for the library with outside groups and individuals; write grants as necessary.
 
- Librarian II responsibilities include all Librarian I duties and: manage the operation of a medium branch library; conduct system-wide and branch inventories; coordinate countywide rotation of books; research difficult reference questions; locate materials; oversee acquisitions and cataloging; responsibility for collections development including selection, evaluation, and deaccessioning; determine materials for permanent deposit; manage Local History collection.
 
- Librarian III responsibilities include all Librarian II duties and: manage the operation of a large branch library; oversee the circulation desk; advise and assist patrons; perform reference work and maintain inter-library loan and intra-library request system; coordinate ongoing inventory and materials acquisition; assist in interviews; train and supervise staff; supervise fines notification and collection; ensure facility condition; participate in projects and programs; represent the branch in the community; write grants as necessary.
 
Qualifications & Special Requirements
Education and Experience:
- Librarian I: A minimum of three years of experience as a Library Specialist; an Associate of Arts Degree may be substituted for one year of specialist experience.
 - Librarian II: A minimum of one year of experience as a Librarian I; a Bachelor's Degree may be substituted for one year of Librarian I experience.
 - Librarian III: Three years of experience supervising in a small or medium branch library as a Librarian I or II; a Bachelor's Degree may be substituted for one year of Librarian I experience; an ALA-accredited MLS Degree is desirable.
 
- Knowledge Of: Library terminology and practices, library materials and current publications; modern supervision techniques and public relations; library organization, cataloging and classification; modern office methods and equipment.
 
- Ability To: Assess community library needs; assist patrons; perform routine reference work; instruct patrons in facility/material use; prepare accurate reports; conduct programs; adapt to new techniques; work with staff and the public; operate computer and equipment; lift up to 40 pounds; mobility to stand, stoop, reach, and bend; some evening and Saturday work may be required.
 
- Special Requirements: May be required to drive a motor vehicle with a valid license; must pass pre-employment background investigation; position may serve as a Disaster Service Worker during County emergency.
