Strengthening and empowering all of the communities we serve.

Advance Media New York (Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard) is looking for a reporter to cover the business aspects of Syracuse and Central New York's food, drink and entertainment scene. This role includes enterprise business reporting, event coverage, exploring regional cultural and entertainment trends, and more.

This position pays between $50,000 to $65,000 per year.

We’re looking for a highly motivated and self-driven individual who is curious about the world around them — someone who will use that curiosity to tell interesting and engaging stories that will generate conversation among our readers.

A week of reporting in this role might include writing about a new restaurant opening or closing in the city, an update on a regional casino development, news of an illegal cannabis operation, and a profile on a leader who makes our community a more vibrant place to live. You’ll write multiple stories each week, ranging from news briefs to well-reported features.

The ideal candidate for this job is a versatile storyteller who’s capable of shooting their own photos and videos to tell a complete story. Applicants with strong familiarity with Central NY will have an edge.

This reporter will be part of a team which covers food and drink, the outdoors, music and the arts, local history, events and more. This is the team that keeps readers informed about what’s happening in the community.

You’ll be responsible for developing a network of sources to help keep readers up-to-date on new and interesting things taking place and the people who make those things happen.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and report enterprise stories on Syracuse and Central New York's food, drink and entertainment scene, including business, events and cultural trends.
  • Cover a range of topics from new openings and closings to regional development, and profiles of community leaders.
  • Publish multiple stories per week, from news briefs to in-depth features.
  • Possess and/or develop skills to shoot and edit photos and video to tell complete stories.
  • Collaborate with editors, photojournalists and producers; work independently when needed.
  • Build and maintain a network of sources to inform readers about new and interesting developments and the people behind them.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ journalism experience with a proven ability to write engaging stories that are clear and accurate;
  • Sound news judgment with the ability to identify and pitch stories that reflect an understanding of local entertainment and business trends and reader interests;
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks;
  • Willingness to work both independently and collaboratively with editors, photojournalists and producers;
  • Experience reviewing documents and lawsuits to inform reporting;
  • Understanding of social media trends with a proven ability to engage an audience on different platforms;
  • The ability to shoot and edit photos and video is strongly preferred;
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed.

You’ll be expected to get out in the community and share what you find with readers.

This is a Syracuse-based position and requires reliable transportation. Ability to work independently, as well as in the downtown Syracuse office.
