Position Description

Radio Design Engineer

Position Description: This is a Radio Design Engineer position in support of the Department of State (DoS). The Design Engineer will perform Subject Matter Expert (SME) level services for the implementation of Department of State radio policy and practices. Advise on implementing new technologies and generate system designs for Emergency Radio Systems located at overseas Embassies and Consulates under the responsibility of GTC Radio (Global Tactical Communications).

Description of Duties:

  • Manage the performance and delivery of technical support services in accordance with the contract.
  • Conduct Subject Matter Expert functions, including analysis and integration of new radio communication technologies, evaluate and update design processes to provide the most effective and reliable communications systems.
  • Generate individual Emergency Radio System designs for overseas locations from information provided through survey documents.
  • Familiar with Radio Propagation Software usage and methodologies by generating radio coverage studies for customer locations.
  • Evaluate Frequency plans and spectrum analysis.
  • Field questions and advise Department of State employees on installed radio systems and assist in troubleshooting problems.
  • Research and evaluate new communications equipment, systems, and ancillaries. Interface with vendors to provide feedback for Department of State needs and use cases.
  • Establish baseline radio system equipment requirements.
  • Generate radio programming for each type of equipment deployed.
  • Generate development, quality and delivery of all project documents on a continuing basis.
  • Generate training and installation guides for field installation technicians.
  • Generate user guides for fielded equipment.
  • Conduct training for field installation technicians.
  • Maintain proficiency in radio troubleshooting techniques and use of all test equipment.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelors or 5+ years of experience in radio installation/repair

Required Experience/Skills/Attributes

  • In-depth knowledge of communications spectrum and technologies to include RF, satellite, LTE, ISP.
  • In-depth knowledge of antenna theory in all spectrums and microwave linking.
  • Experience in radio system site design requirements and subscriber equipment.
  • Experience evaluating new equipment and integration with current technologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of current radio equipment configurations and industry standards.
  • Experience in radio communication equipment installation (infrastructure and subscriber).

Desired Experience/Skills/Attributes

  • Communications equipment programming experience (Motorola, Kenwood, Micom, Barret, Cisco)
  • Radio Mobile radio propagation software
  • Antenna theory and product knowledge (Sinclair, Procomm, DB Spectra, Laird)
  • Use of multiple brands and types of test equipment (spectrum analyzers and service monitors) as well as small handheld testing devices
