About The Position

Are you passionate about connecting people with information, ideas, and community resources? Mohave County Kingman Library is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Library Assistant I to join our team. This position is public facing and will mainly involve direct interaction with patrons. Occasional public speaking at programs or outreach assignments is expected.

Working Schedule

  • Monday through Thursday
  • Tuesday through Saturday

Working Conditions / Requirements

Frequent standing, stooping, bending, crouching, pushing, pulling, and overhead reaching may be required. Ladders or step stools may be used. You may need to operate a bookmobile and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Maintains, with relative independence, a significant clerical process or office activity.
  • Maintains and establishes files, entering information into filing and data systems accurately.
  • Prepares standardized reports and statements.
  • Collects, compiles, and submits data for statistical reports, operating studies, or policy formulation; develops and runs reports and queries.
  • Performs clerical tasks: answering phones, responding to information requests, assisting patrons with forms, maintaining records, typing, and filing.
  • Prepares library borrower cards, assists in maintaining patron files, and distributes informational materials.
  • Assists in maintaining a pleasant, informative library through promotional displays.
  • Assists with collection development, inventory, and shelf maintenance. Searches shelves for misplaced or missing books.
  • Checks materials in and out, maintains circulation files, reserve lists, hold notices, notifies patrons of available pickup items, and processes delinquency notifications and fine payments.
  • Assists patrons in using library tools and reference resources, locating reference needs, and preparing bibliographies, brochures, pamphlets, and handouts.
  • Maintains a clean and organized facility.

On Assignment Outreach

  • Assist in training new library coordinators and volunteers.
  • Plan, develop, and present activities or programs for children, teens, and adults for community libraries and bookmobiles.
  • Drive the bookmobile to designated locations.
  • Oversee stocking, cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of bookmobiles.
  • Supervise the bookmobile coordinator.
  • Maintain interlibrary loan processes for community libraries and bookmobiles.
  • Operate community libraries and bookmobiles in the absence of regular staff.
  • Update community library pages on the library website and prepare related brochures, pamphlets, and handouts.
  • Assist with packing and unpacking weekly courier deliveries.

On Assignment Public Service

  • Perform clerical tasks: answering phones, processing information requests, assisting patrons with forms, and maintaining records.
  • Prepare library borrower cards and manage patron files and informational material distribution.
  • Maintain library displays and promotional materials.
  • Assist with collection development, inventory, and shelf maintenance.
  • May oversee and instruct library pages and volunteers as assigned.
  • Provide training and instruction in specific areas to staff and volunteers.
  • Solicit volunteer assistance by phone and in person as needed.
  • Check materials in and out, maintain circulation files, reserve lists, hold notices, and process delinquency notifications and fines.
  • Help patrons use library tools and reference resources; locate reference needs; prepare bibliographies, brochures, pamphlets, and handouts.
  • Assist with interlibrary loan (ILL) functions, including screening, verification, and processing of requests.
  • Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate special programs and projects that promote specialized library functions; serve on committees as required.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One year of library experience preferred.
  • Two years of general clerical experience preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training may be considered.

Special Job Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for operation of motor vehicles on Arizona roads at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed.
  • Provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County.
  • Must successfully complete Mohave County Van Dynamics if assigned to Outreach Services or activities involving driving the bookmobile.
  • Experience driving bookmobiles or other large vehicles, if assigned to activities driving the bookmobile.
  • May work with seniors and very young patrons.
  • Library facility organization and operations and procedures, terminology, and policies related to providing library services.
  • English grammar, spelling, and arithmetic skills.
  • Standard office practices, procedures, and equipment proficiency.
  • Filing and information systems proficiency.
  • Computing literacy including keyboards, peripheral equipment, spreadsheet, word processing, and department‑specific software.
  • Efficient operation and utilization of modern office machines.
  • Maintain and establish filing systems.
  • Use sound judgment to solve work problems through established guidelines and interpret technical and departmental information.
  • Work independently in completing assigned tasks accurately and maintain standard correspondence, files, and reports.
  • Deal courteously with the public and obtain necessary information to assist patrons.
  • Communicate effectively with all people, verbally and in writing.
  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Deal with individuals who may be disruptive, unruly, or unstable.
  • Perform essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
