Field Service Engineer II (SEM, TEM, FIB) – Onsite, Hillsboro, OR
Field service engineer for the Materials and Structural Analysis (MSD) Electron Microscopy (EM) business. Responsible for the on‑site installation, servicing, and repair of complex equipment – Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Small/Large Dual Beam (SDB/LDB) and related systems. Performs investigation and improvement of operational quality, instructs customers, serves as a company liaison, and conducts on‑site installations of the full range of Thermo Fisher Scientific electron microscopy systems and their associated options.
Working Conditions
- Able to lift 40 lbs. without assistance.
- Laboratory setting; personal protective equipment (PPE) required (safety glasses, gowning, gloves, lab coat, ear plugs, etc.).
- Will work with hazardous or toxic materials.
- Standard schedule (Monday–Friday).
Responsibilities
- Conduct on‑site installation of complex equipment and follow testing procedures to ensure proper working order.
- Execute scheduled planned maintenance visits.
- Provide troubleshooting and repair support for customers and other field service personnel.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with customers, system users, and company personnel.
- Successfully complete technical training, as required.
- Complete and submit field service reports for assigned tools.
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks.
- Partner with colleagues to acquire technical guidance needed to problem‑solve system solutions.
- Provide training to customers and users on system maintenance.
- Offer feedback to product quality teams.
- Update and correct Thermo Fisher system documentation.
- Provide guidance for reporting and isolating unique system problems.
- Act as a subject expert and resource for training.
- Collaborate with application scientists to develop solutions that meet user challenges.
- Maintain Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Four‑I Values.
Qualifications
- Education: University degree/Bachelor’s degree in electronics, physics, engineering, computer science, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
- Experience: 4–5 years of experience, including operating, troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating complex analysis tools such as SEM, TEM, FIB, or similar systems. Experience with Ultra‑High Vacuum (UHV) and digital voltmeter/logic problem‑solving is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and make independent decisions.
- Strong attention to detail, problem‑solving, teamwork, and confidentiality.
- Proficiency with Windows software environments and ability to read and interpret schematics.
- Extensive experience troubleshooting ultra‑high vacuum and high‑voltage systems.
- Comfortable using PPE and walking longer distances (up to 50 lbs. lift).
- Valid driver’s license and passport; willingness to travel 0–25% of the time, including internationally as needed.
- Excellent interpersonal communication, time management, and customer service skills.
