THE OPPORTUNITY
Perform library administrative support, paraprofessional library and customer service duties; provide circulation services; use and update computer databases. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to:
- Conduct circulation activities, including checking library materials in and out, registering and issuing cards, calculating and collecting fines and fees, and explaining County library circulation policies and procedures.
- Assist library professional staff with reference duties and children’s programming, and refer difficult problems to appropriate supervisory or professional staff members.
- Contact patrons regarding overdue books and materials; receive, verify, and release materials for on‑line reserve requests.
- Sort books and related materials according to alphabetical, numerical, and categorical systems; collect, stack, shelve, and re‑shelf library materials.
- Process library card applications and issue library cards; maintain records of current patron information utilizing the library automation system.
- Receive, research, and respond to patrons’ reference requests; locate and provide requested materials and information; assist and instruct patrons in the proper use of library equipment and reference sources including internet, electronic databases, and other technology devices.
- Reserve library materials and notify patrons of their availability; initiate and process inter‑library loan requests.
- Perform basic cataloging of books and related library materials.
- Monitor the condition of books and materials and perform necessary binding and repairs.
- Assist with the development of library collections, including ordering, purchasing, distribution, and use of books and other materials in area(s) of specialization; review and recommend the acquisition of new materials for the library’s collection; identify materials to be removed from the collection.
- Assist in the development of a variety of library‑related literature‑based and educational programs and activities.
- Prepare branch bank deposits.
Ideal Candidate Description
The ideal candidate for the Library Assistant position is a highly motivated, organized, and customer‑focused individual with a passion for customer service and interacting with the public while providing exceptional library services to the community. This position requires the ability to operate a large electric bookmobile, often working independently in the community. Therefore, the ideal candidate is comfortable working alone, exercises sound judgment, and can effectively problem‑solve in a variety of situations while maintaining a high level of professionalism and customer service. The successful candidate has strong communication and interpersonal skills, is adept at assisting patrons with diverse needs, and can perform routine and technical library tasks accurately and efficiently. They are detail‑oriented, capable of organizing and maintaining records, and able to follow established procedures while also demonstrating initiative in addressing challenges. Additionally, the ideal candidate is adaptable, dependable, and committed to fostering an engaging and welcoming library experience, both in the branch and in mobile service settings. Familiarity with library classification systems, reference materials, and modern technology, combined with a collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for community outreach, will ensure success in this role.
Qualifications
Human Resources will assess your application to determine if you are minimally qualified using the following minimum qualifications.
- Library Assistant I: Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by college‑level coursework in liberal arts, or a related field and one (1) year of experience in customer services, office support, or library support duties.
- Library Assistant II: In addition to the above, one (1) year of experience providing library patron and paraprofessional support at a level equivalent to the County’s class of Library Assistant I.
Licenses and Certifications
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment and a satisfactory driving record.
