Editorial Assistant, Union Square & Co SUMMARY:

The editorial assistant supports the Editorial Director and Senior Editor, Cooking & Lifestyle at Union Square & Co. The editorial assistant is responsible for day‑to‑day tasks such as reviewing proposals and providing feedback; scheduling and managing meetings; preparing paperwork such as P&Ls, contract requests, and title fact sheets; researching and reviewing trends; and participating in the manuscript review/editing process. The editorial assistant will also be involved in essential leadership tasks, such as list management and process oversight. In addition to providing administrative support, the assistant will liaise with authors, agents, and various teams and departments across the company, and will have the opportunity to work on cooking, lifestyle, and illustrated gift books. Above all, they will be excited to work with both authors and an energized team to make beautiful, smart, cool books that both entertain and inspire. This role is an excellent opportunity for an organized self‑starter who is attuned to lifestyle trends and is curious about the book‑making process.

Duties Include

Evaluating manuscripts and proposals, including tracking them, writing reader’s reports, and drafting rejection letters

Researching trends and competition

Writing catalog/jacket copy and title information sheets

Preparing and trafficking essential paperwork, such as P&Ls and contract requests

Coordinating and creating materials for periodic sales meetings

Collaborating across all in‑house departments (publicity, marketing, sales, production, design, etc.)

Acting as the point of contact between a book’s author/agent and its editor

Providing administrative support, including calendar management, filing expense reports, tracking deadlines, and scheduling meetings

Interest in working on a wide variety of nonfiction in the cooking, lifestyle, wellness, puzzle, and pop culture categories

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Exceptional attention to detail and timely follow‑up skills, both internally and externally

Superb organizational skills and methods, as well as an ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast‑paced environment

Ability to work independently and collaborate with the team when needed

Proactive in reaching out for direction, tasks, and guidance

Proficient in creative problem solving, decision making, and time management

A proven record of meeting deadlines with effective organization and prioritization skills in a fast‑paced environment

Thoughtful care and awareness in interpersonal communications, both internally and externally

4‑year college degree or equivalent work experience

Prior work or internship experience within publishing or an editorial capacity

Tech savvy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Flexible hybrid schedule with three days a week in the office

Compensation and Benefits Compensation: $50,000. Salary may vary based on skills, experience, and location. Overtime may be required for exceptional workload issues or special projects.
