BUSINESS/FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE Through its merger with Oil Search, Santos has acquired and assumed operatorship over a world-class portfolio of oil leases on the Alaskan North Slope, USA.
Our focus in Alaska is advancement of our Pikka Phase 1 project, which includes a single drill site, an oil processing facility, and other infrastructure to support production of 80,000 barrels of oil per day.
Pikka has been identified as being among the top quartile of oil and gas development projects for greenhouse gas emissions performance. Pikka is poised to play an important role in the energy transition and is aligned with our company goal of managing climate change risk.
The Pikka Unit is one of the largest conventional oil discoveries made in the United States in the last 30 years, and the Pikka Phase 1 Project is the most significant development on Alaska's North Slope in more than 20 years.
The permitted Pikka development project includes two additional drill sites. The Alaska assets also include discoveries made from both the Mitquq and Stirrup exploration wells drilled in 2020. These opportunities combine to offer a clear path to long‑term growth in Alaska.
POSITION PURPOSE The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for supporting process safety across the engineering design, construction, commissioning, and operation phases of Santos Alaska's Pikka development. This will include implementation and use of safety management systems and development of a safety planning program for the Pikka development and operations.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Promote and lead in the implementation of Santos Ltd policies and procedures, including Safety, health, environment, process, people and planning
Supports efforts to achieve an Incident & Injury Free project and subsequent operations
Schedules/organizes Process Safety Activities such as Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)
Supports implementation of process safety system
Educate team members and contractors on the importance of process safety management
Reviews and evaluates contractor safety information and ensure their safe operation. Provides safety & health information/expertise to the Alaska & Contractor Project team(s). Monitors contractor construction safety programs. Recommends course of action on safety performance of contractors
Assist in any safety performance criteria in vendor selection
Ensures processes around Preliminary Process Hazard Reviews, Process Hazard Review, Hazops, Hazids (etc.) are carried out in accordance with industry/regulatory requirements
Assist project team in identifying project safety concerns
Participate in any safety workshops and meetings (including HAZIDs and HAZOPs)
Support the Health, Safety, Security and Environment department as required. Provides input for HSE reports to project management. Reviews adequacy of safety systems & procedures.
Responsible for awareness and management of all regulatory issues relating to process safety management
Participate in incident investigations and drive initiatives to reduce risk
Verifies appropriate equipment & procedures are used for safe work performance
Participates in pre-start up safety review
Ensures that both Santos project and contractor personnel employ appropriate equipment and tools for the safe performance of the work
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
A Bachelor's or Master's degree or equivalent in an appropriate field
5+ years of major upstream project and/or operations experience
Demonstrated program development and extensive knowledge of OSHA PSM 29 CFR 1910.119
Has clearly demonstrated strong technical competence
Ability to work within a diverse cultural environment
Demonstrated interpersonal/teambuilding skills
Strong written and oral communication skills
FORMAL QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's or Master's degree or equivalent in an appropriate field
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
5+ years of major upstream project and/or operations experience
Demonstrated program development and extensive knowledge of OSHA PSM 29 CFR 1910.119
Has clearly demonstrated strong technical competence
Ability to work within a diverse cultural environment
Demonstrated interpersonal/teambuilding skills
