Library Page Position

The successful candidate will provide high-quality customer service, accurate shelving of library books and other materials, and library circulation services as needed. The library page will help users locate library materials, assist with printing, troubleshoot public computer issues, monitor the building for security and report issues appropriately when necessary. Under general supervision, the library page performs clerical and other tasks related to maintaining library materials and private patron records. Work primarily involves shelving new and returned books and other library materials, preparing new books to be shelved, ensuring all books are in their proper location, as well as performing basic book repairs. The library page will also assist users with other general library services and basic computer support. This position requires working nights and weekends as necessary. The library page will also assist patrons with questions and refer the patron to other staff members as needed. This position reports to the Library Director or other assigned supervisor. Essential Job Functions: Provides polite, high-quality customer service to the Jackson County community. Returns books and other materials to library shelves, ensuring they are arranged neatly and in accordance with standardized library filing practices (Dewey Decimal System). Prepares new books for shelving including applying barcodes and other identifying features as well as other physical processing as required. Systematically reads the shelves ensuring that all books are maintained in the correct order on the shelves; keeps a detailed log of areas read including dates and times. Repairs damaged and old books as required. Checks materials in and out, handles reserved and interlibrary loan items, and works with the library circulation system as needed. Assists patrons with questions as needed. Refers patrons to the appropriate staff person if unable to satisfactorily fulfill patron requests. Helps patrons find materials in the online catalog and locate them in the stacks or online. Educates users about library services and policies. Provides timely backup support for library staff on breaks and other occasions when requested. Provides security in the building and reports problems when necessary. Troubleshoots problems with printers, copiers, and PCs in the library building. Reports any issues through the appropriate staff channels in a timely manner. Performs other related work as required. Qualifications and Education Requirements: Graduation from high school or GED. Must have a valid driver's license prior to employment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of books, magazines, and related materials available to the public including computer databases available in the library. Knowledge of library services, practices, procedures, and policies. Knowledge of standard office and clerical practices. Ability to use standard office machines including but not limited to multiple line telephone, intercom, photocopier, fax machine, etc. Ability to follow established procedures and to perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy. Ability to lift and carry objects of moderate weight and have a moderate degree of physical flexibility. Ability to perform a variety of tasks with frequent interruptions while maintaining a high degree of concentration and accuracy. Ability to maintain a professional manner exercising tact, courtesy and respect while in frequent contact with library patrons and the general public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all other library staff as well as volunteers as necessitated by work assignments. Additional Requirements: Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, typewriters, microfilm readers, copiers, etc. Must be able to exert up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Requires the ability to climb, reach and/or stretch arms, legs or other parts of body to grasp objects. Physical demand requirements are for Light Work to Medium Work. Intelligence: Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems, and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English. Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; to multiply and divide. Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape. Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment. Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress. Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking: expressing ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
