Description
The purpose of this classification is to assist staff with circulation desk procedures and materials processing, and to assist patrons as needed.
Schedule
Part‑time; approximately 25 hours per week. Hours: Monday 11:00 am‑5:00 pm; Tuesday OFF; Wednesday 2:00 pm‑8:00 pm; Thursday 9:00 am‑6:00 pm; Friday alternating 1:00 pm‑6:00 pm; Saturday 9:00 am‑2:00 pm. Requires one night each week and every other Saturday. Schedule is open to flexibility and subject to change.
Essential Functions
- Performs customer service functions; greets visitors and directs to areas of library; provides assistance and information related to library services, fees, policies, procedures, general information or directions, or other issues; assists patrons with use of Alabama Virtual Library, PAC search stations, Internet computers, copy machines, and other equipment; assists patrons in locating library materials; researches book titles, book availability, patron records, or related information; reserves materials for patrons.
- Issues library cards and updates patron records; checks in/out books and audio‑visual materials to patrons; retrieves materials from book drop; processes returns and shelves materials.
- Assists with circulation desk activities involving checking library materials in and out, checking items for damage, emptying book drops, issuing applications and library cards, and maintaining patron records; receives and processes books on hold.
- Answers the telephone and provides information or takes/relays messages; contacts patrons by phone or mail regarding holds or overdue materials.
- Receives and records payments for overdue book fines, donations, and memorials.
- Returns library books/materials to appropriate shelving areas; shelves/places materials in appropriate order; reads labels to ensure materials are arranged in proper order; searches for lost/missing materials; searches online catalog to locate materials.
- Operates a personal computer, scanner, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, e‑mail, Internet, or other computer applications; performs basic maintenance of computer system and office equipment, such as backing up data, replacing toner, or refilling paper.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Knowledge of computer data entry systems and word processing applications.
- Skill in starting, stopping, operating and monitoring the functioning of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed schema or plan; includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.
- Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; involves semi‑routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
- Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by college‑level coursework or vocational training in personal computer operations; supplemented by five (5) months previous experience and/or training involving library operations, Dewey Decimal classification, customer service, and personal computer operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses or Certifications: Valid State of Alabama driver’s license.
Must be at least 18 years of age to work for the city and must be at least 20 years of age to operate City vehicles.

Physical Demands
The work is light work requiring up to 20 pounds of force. Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects and materials of moderate weight. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an office environment. Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
