The Music Therapist will be part of an interdisciplinary team delivering structured, evidence-based, and trauma-informed services designed to promote emotional healing, behavioral stability, and sustained recovery. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven program and help establish a therapeutic foundation for residents in a clinically managed treatment setting.
Position Overview
The Music Therapist provides clinical and experiential music therapy interventions to individuals participating in ASAM 3.7 (medically monitored) and 3.5 (clinically managed) residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. This position supports clients’ recovery through music-based modalities that foster emotional regulation, stress reduction, communication, and self-expression. The therapist collaborates closely with clinical, nursing, and case management staff to reinforce individualized treatment goals and stabilize residents in early recovery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Facilitate individual and group music therapy sessions consistent with residents’ treatment plans and clinical needs.
- Implement evidence-based interventions such as lyric analysis, songwriting, improvisation, guided imagery, and rhythm-based activities to support emotional expression, relapse prevention, and self-awareness.
- Adapt interventions for clients with co-occurring mental health conditions and varying levels of clinical acuity.
- Work collaboratively with clinical, nursing, and support staff to coordinate care, manage behavioral concerns, and enhance therapeutic engagement.
- Document treatment services, progress notes, and session summaries in compliance with regulatory and facility documentation standards.
- Participate in treatment team meetings, case reviews, and discharge planning to ensure continuity of care.
- Contribute to the development of therapeutic programming that complements cognitive-behavioral, trauma-informed, and relapse prevention approaches.
- Maintain therapeutic equipment and ensure safety standards during group sessions.
- Model professionalism, empathy, and respect in alignment with trauma-informed and recovery-oriented practices.
- Engage in ongoing professional development, supervision, and training in accordance with state and facility requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Music Therapy from an accredited institution.
- Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) credential required.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience working in a behavioral health, psychiatric, or substance use disorder treatment setting preferred.
- Experience working within ASAM 3.5 or 3.7 level of care environments strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed care, co-occurring disorders, and group facilitation techniques.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, 24-hour treatment environment with multidisciplinary staff.
- Must successfully pass background check and pre-employment drug screening.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, and actively engage clients for extended sessions.
