Job Description
The Hall Memorial Library in Ellington seeks an enthusiastic, creative, and tech-savvy team-player with excellent customer service skills and a commitment to the importance of the library in the community. The successful candidate will perform a wide variety of library tasks, including circulation desk duties, reader’s advisory, and patron support, and should be able to work comfortably with the public and handle the challenges of a busy public library serving a diverse community.
Hourly Wage: $18.50
Schedule: Part-time; Schedule includes Saturday 10:00 to 2:00 and Mondays 10:00 to 1:00 pm; Additional hours available may include days, evenings and weekends..
OBJECTIVES
Under the supervision of the Library Director, performs public service and clerical duties related to library operations and services. Uses independent judgement to assist patrons. Staffs the Circulation and Reference Desks as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assists patrons in selecting, locating, using and borrowing library materials and resources in varying formats at Circulation and Reference Desks, as assigned.
Responsible for opening and closing library and service areas as assigned; records statistics; reconciles cash drawers; secures building.
Charges and discharges materials; negotiates payment of fines and bills; issues and renews patron library cards.
Takes hold requests and interlibrary loan requests for patrons. Notifies when materials are available.
Oversees email overdue notification process. Prints and processes hard copy overdue notices.
Oversees paperback collection.
Runs and processes holds pull-list when assigned.
Processes library materials for circulation, i.e. labels, stamping, etc.
Processes incoming and outgoing delivery materials.
Performs collection maintenance tasks such as shelf reading, shifting of materials, repairing damaged books and materials, covering and recovering books.
Assists and instructs the public with use of computers, printers, photocopiers, fax machine, microfilm reader/printer, poster printer and other equipment.
Assists and instructs public with use of digital materials, i.e. ebooks, eaudiobooks, and digital magazines.
Maintains public information bulletin boards and brochure rack.
Assists with planning and presentation of programs.
Prepares and sets up displays.
Designs and creates bibliographies, brochures, bookmarks, posters, etc.
Assists with outreach services as required, i.e. homebound delivery.
Assists co-workers as needed.
Attends scheduled staff meetings.
Attends professional development classes and meetings as appropriate.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of the principles and practices of library work in a public library setting.
Working knowledge of reading materials, books and authors.
Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors and patrons of all ages
Ability to follow library policies and procedures
Ability to recognize and maintain the need for confidentiality and patron privacy
Ability to handle money and count change
Ability to maintain files and records
Ability to multi-task
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Knowledge of and ability to work with and troubleshoot computers and applications, i.e. Microsoft Office programs, Google.
Ability to work with office machines, such as copiers, printers, and cash register and troubleshoot basic issues.
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT OPERATION
Operates the following equipment as required, including but not limited to, computers, ILS system, fax machines, photocopier, scanner, digital projector, e-readers, digital cameras, microfiche/film reader/printer, general audiovisual and office equipment, etc.
REQUIRED PHYSICAL EFFORT
Sitting and standing for extended periods of time; lifting supplies, books, materials, and computer equipment up to 25 pounds; pushing heavy carts, reaching for books on shelves, sitting and kneeling on floor and climbing on stools; viewing computer screen for extended periods of time.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum)
High school diploma or equivalent and computer literacy required; some college preferred. Twelve months of related experience, including customer/public service required; library experience preferred.
