Primary Duties/Brief Description of Work:
The Assistant Library Catalog position primarily orders children and young adult materials, builds electronic carts of items in an online vendor system, assigns the number of copies and library receiving locations for each item, assigns purchase order numbers, and then transmits the carts. Some additional orders may be placed with other vendors manually. Communicates with selectors regularly to ensure orders are correct. Catalogs materials that come unprocessed, which involves assigning a call number, editing the record in OCLC, and downloading the record into OCLC Wise. Track invoices to ensure they are paid in a timely manner. Regularly deletes the bibliographic records of "last copy" items when these are removed from the collection. Continuously, learn the various functions of OCLC Wise by reviewing new developments with vendors by communicating in online forums, attending meetings, and actively seeking solutions to address Technical Services needs. Sorts and distributes mail on a daily basis. Serves as occasional backup for collection of mail and serials distribution. Have knowledge of, or the ability to learn, vendor ordering systems and the current library management software. The successful candidate should also be detail-oriented, demonstrate intermediate computer skills, and have knowledge of cataloging rules and standards, including MARC records and Dewey decimal classifications. Experience with library management systems, OCLC products, and library vendor software is necessary.
